It isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.

... View MoreStraight away: The best one could do with a sci-fi alien based plot in a budget like that!Visually, it is a masterpiece, well shot and the CGI (whatever little there is and make up is so very very good! It is more of a single act play in many ways. I haven't much to say except we all have seen much much much worse movies made on very inflated budgets. This is the kind of work all movie makers need to be doing. Watch it in HD or superHD, its worth it.The plot is quite simple yet very well executed and the cinematography does so much justice to the whole premise, that you can hardly take your eyes away. Sci-Fi channels, this is definitely the kind of work you should be doing! What is budget in the face of talent? If any one is interested, this movie is currently on NETFLIX in superHD.
... View MoreFor those not aware, this is basically a 'student' film, made by amateurs who somehow got a budget and the time together. But it's a rather good one. It's a spin off from the 'Enemy Mine' universe, and that's not blowing anything, you find that out pretty quickly near the start. It's well shot (the landscapes are austerely gorgeous), and there were a couple of moments, just a few seconds here and there, where there was some beautiful capturing of reactions among the protagonists.Rookie mistakes:* Dialogue that drags on and on with too much back and forth. They needed to sit down and edit the hell out of all the conversations. I'm impressed they managed to get the film up to feature length! But it's mostly talk-padding, unfortunately.* Shot sameness. Basically in a film no two shots should ever look the same, unless you are doing so deliberately to make a point. But this is largely a function of how much time and effort you can afford to put into the thing. It's also why roving cameras and continuous takes have become more popular (and all this 'found footage' rubbish). Simplest way is to shoot all scenes with at least 2 cameras, then shoot them again with the cameras moved, and make sure they are all at different zoom distances - gives you 4 streams you can edit to jump between that all look different. And that's about all the criticism I can level. The story could have been told in 40 minutes, and probably should have been, and if I want to give them another digging at I could say what the hell was with the capes and crests on the helmets? But, style is a choice, they wanna make it look that way, that's their prerogative.OK - now I wanna see the same team go forth and make a REAL film! They have proved they have what it takes!
... View MoreDefinitely far better than the the IMDb.com rating suggests. The ending is a bit flat, otherwise this is a first-class science fiction story.Although there was obviously a limited budget for this film — there are few actors (none of them well-known) and essentially a single location — the cinematography, the sound quality and the editing are all up to scratch for a major project. The story is good (it kept me hooked) and there is plenty action among some interesting ideas. If you are a science fiction fan with a mental age above 10, you should get some enjoyment from this film. I would especially recommend it if you find many big budget movies to be nothing more than a relentless cacophony of banality and torture porn.
... View MoreSeveral years ago, I saw a strange short film on the internet called "Batman: Dead End". I say strange because the film was pretty much a homemade project--done with a VERY limited budget of only $30,000. Yet, despite this, it LOOKED like a Hollywood production of Batman!! Dollar-for-dollar, it's one of the most amazing shorts I've ever seen. Now, with "Hunter Prey", the same filmmaker, Sandy Collora, has returned with more money and a desire to make a full-length film. Can he once again produce a Hollywood quality production with only a bare-bones budget of $425,000? To put it simply, yes....the film is another astounding success. Despite very, very limited funds, the film is excellent throughout and looks as if it cost much, much more. Part of this could be because Collora is experienced as a special effects guy--and I am sure his experience with big projects exposed him to folks who knew their craft as well. This might explain how the makeup, music, cinematography and computer effects were so good--better looking that the films made for the ScyFi Channel--at a fraction of the cost. All I know is that it looked darn good! The plot is very simple. The film begins with a small group of soldiers stranded on a desert planet (actually, Baja California). Apparently, their prisoner somehow sabotaged their starship and was responsible for the deaths of many of their crew. Now, these men are out to recapture the prisoner--and they are ordered NOT to kill the creature. But it's very cunning--and is able to take out the soldiers one after another after another. Who or what IS this creature? What is going to happen next? Tune in to this very tense little film to find out for yourself. In many ways, this film is quite reminiscent of the excellent sci-fi film, "Enemy Mine". While it's not as deep a story, there are definite parallels. BUT, "Enemy Mine" cost $33,000,000--and that was over 25 years ago!!! All in all, while this is not a great sci-fi film compared to the entire genre, for the money it spent it IS a great film. I think every young film student should see this--and see how you can make a wonderful film on a shoestring. In addition to praising Collora (I am NOT a family member, friend or paid spokesman), kudos also go to the film's co-writer and the actors. Again, a lot was done for very little and I was impressed. I can't wait to see their next project!
