Excellent but underrated film

If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

Hot summer nights is a pretty good teenage nostalgia film for those trying to relive the early 90's, but lacks something in its core that I can't quite place. It's nostalgic but not so much that it distracts from the story, however they missed a few opportunities to really showcase what life was really like on the cape in 91'. The soundtrack would have been incredible in any other movie, but for this one it just didn't work. Using music to tell a story or create a feeling in a scene is incredibly important, and mixing genres/decades is great in normal movies but with a nostalgia piece like this one it confuses the audience. The Shangri-Las and the Outfield? The casting was fantastic, this is what makes the film better than what it is. Timothee Chalmet is a great actor, and but kinda struggles to find a balance between being the smart one, and being the naive one at the same time. I can't wait to see what his future productions are going to be, I think he makes great choices on screen. Miaka Monroe is so gorgeous, and she did good playing the troubled dream girl persona. I would have definitely liked to have seen what happened to these too after the summer ended. Did they end up together in some random trailer park with 6 kids? Or did they run away and find themselves in a better situation? All in all Hot Summer Nights was a pretty good movie, I would recommend it, even with its off kilter soundtrack it's still a good time.

I wanted to watch this for the longest time but never found it anywhere. This is one of them movies that just makes you ask yourself "what if?". Danny's innocence and the fact that he starts drug dealing without knowing the full consequences of his actions is the most interesting and the primary topic of this film. The only thing that makes this movie interesting is the fact that Danny isn't some macho man who knows exactly what he's doing but rather the opposite. An amazing film good for watching outside on hot summer nights.
