... View MoreNot much to see in this DTV Sequel. Coming a bit late at that (6 years) it is a vapid and vacant Horror Movie with two expressionless Leads stiffly making there way around a most boring story of Govt. Super Soldier experiments and well, not much else. After a gory and effective opening, things flatten out and it methodically moves as a Police chase and quite a bit of talk. This isn't Awful but not by much. The effects are infrequent and unimpressive and the Cast is unremarkable with some really Bad Acting even for a B.Christian Slater fans can again marvel at the once popular Actor's decline and inability to find nothing more than supporting Roles or the Lead in some really iffy stuff. There is a Mystery there that has yet to be uncovered.Anyway, this is not much of a Movie and is recommended for Horror Completest only, and for those Shut-Ins that will watch anything, even something that is nothing.
... View MoreIt's one thing to make a sequel with different characters but it's another thing to make a sequel with a plot that is so contradictory to its predecessor that it almost seems pointless to even watch. I was not the biggest fan of the first Hollow Man (2000) mostly because of its story. The same goes for this film, however, there a couple elements that still leave this sequel watchable.Hollow Man 2 continues the story of the first film by involving its characters with an almost identical plot. After the failure of Sebastian Caine as a test subject to test the power of invisibility, the government decided to try out this experiment again. The difference is that they tested it on a well-trained soldier. And guess what; nothings changed! The test subject was Michael Griffin (Christian Slater) and now he's become uncontrollable for anyone to handle.Someone tell me why making a new invisible villain was such important thing to do? If the test didn't work the first time, what made them think performing the test on another unstable subject was a good idea? This is just another problem child. To try and contain him, the government sends out task forces to try and capture Griffin but like we all know, predictable as ever, they won't. Along side this, Frank Turner (Peter Facinelli) is sent to protect the doctor, Maggie Dalton (Laura Regan) who performed the experiment on Griffin because now Griffin is after her. As the plot continues, Turner and Dalton will develop a relationship, which will allow them to be closer to each other than they thought they ever would be. But this kind of subplot is minimally explored due to its slimmed running time. The things that still held up during this add-on were the carnage and visual effects. It's no Paul Verhoeven film, but it still has some strong scenes of violence. And for a Direct-to-Video sequel, the visual effects are top notch looking. I'm surprised the crew could still do that with such a smaller budget. I was definitely impressed with that. And to not give the ending away, I'm curious to if there is hope for an invisible person, because maybe not all of them are unstable. Could this lead to a Hollow Man 3? Probably not, but it would be interesting if it goes that route. For a Direct-to-Video sequel, the visuals are good and so is the violence but it doesn't add anything knew to the story. If anything, it ignores the first film almost entirely.
... View MoreHollow Man II is set in Seattle where scientist Dr. Devin Villiers (John Shaw) is brutally killed at a society function, Seattle detectives Frank Turner (Peter Facineli) & his partner Lisa Martinez (Sarah Deakins) are put on the case but are soon taken off it again when the US military show an interest. Frank & Lisa are assigned to protect fellow scientist Dr. Maggie Dalton (Laura Regan) who might be the killers next target but the job was one big set-up designed to lure the killer into the open by the military & Lisa is killed by an invisible assassin named Michael Griffin (Christian Slater) who needs a serum developed by Dalton to stay alive & will do anything to get it. Frank saves Maggie & together they go on the run from the US military & Griffin the invisible assassin who could quite literally be anywhere...Directed by Claudio Faeh this was the straight-to-DVD sequel to Paul Verhoven's rather splendid horror thriller Hollow Man (2000) & I think it's fairly safe to say that Hollow Man II is nowhere near as good. The script by Joel Soisson has no real connection to the original apart from the fact it features invisible men & an invisibility serum, while the original was a tight tense thriller set in a hi-tech lab with a small group of character's & features plenty of Verhoven's sex, gore, sadism & spectacular effect here in Hollow Man II the plot is reduced to nothing more than a strictly average at best cop thriller told from the point of view of a detective who sets out to be the hero & kill the bad guy & if that wasn't clichéd & predictable enough even his partner is killed so there's a little bit of revenge motivation in here as well. Then there's the been done to death plot about the US military trying to create the 'ultimate weapon' through science & it all going wrong & spiralling out of control as innocent people start turning up dead & then they wanting to hush it all up as they try to rectify the situation. The whole film feels by-the-numbers, lifeless & a bit forgettable although having said that at least it moves along at a decent pace & at under 90 minutes in length it doesn't outstay it's welcome. The character's are fairly poor, the cop is standard thriller clichés all the way, by the end the scientist has just becomes a screaming female to be rescued type character & even the bad guy's are given little development with Griffin given no more motivation other than he is mad.So there's definitely a large drop in the quality of the story & that's not the only aspect that suffers in comparison to the original Hollow Man as the special effects are fairly forgettable & there isn't even a proper scene where someone goes invisible unlike the original where there's a highly detailed & impressive effect where Kevin Bacon becomes invisible vein by vein & the two or three brief shots in Hollow Man II were actually taken from Hollow Man. The special effect are of the cheap variety, scenes of doors opening by themselves or merely the sound of someone walking or people having to 'fight' thin air. The only real special effects scene is at the end when two invisible men fight each other in the pouring rain & the rain drops hit them & reveal their outlines. There's a brief scene with some nudity & a nice opening murder as someone has their throat slashed with very bloody results but apart from those two scenes this is all rather tame & doesn't contain anywhere near the glorious excess gore & sex of the original. Not good in my book & a definite strike against it.Probably made on a fraction of the originals budget Hollow Man II has pretty good production values although it's rather cold, dull & colourless to watch. Although set entirely in Seattle the film was shot entirely in Vancouver in Canada in order to keep that budget as small as possible. The acting is alright but the two main leads lack any charisma or personality, one time A-list Hollywood star Christian Slater only has about five minutes of screen time since the rest of the film his character is invisible.Hollow Man II is an alright film if your looking for an average cop thriller with a few Sc-Fi horror elements thrown in there to pass the time but it's nowhere near as excessive or good as the original & you will probably have completely forgotten about it by the time the end credits stop rolling.
... View MoreIn Seattle, after the mysterious death of the scientist Dr. Devin Villiers (John Shaw), Detective Frank Turner (Peter Facinelli) and his partner Det. Lisa Martinez (Sarah Deakins) are assigned to protect Devin's colleague Dr. Maggie Dalton (Laura Regan). Lisa is killed while protecting Maggie, and Frank presses her to tell what is happening. She discloses that a veteran soldier called Michael Griffin (Christian Slater) was submitted to an experiment with the objective to create the ultimate national security weapon, an undetectable soldier. However, the experiment failed, with horrible side effects due to the damage to the cells caused by the radiation. Michael is chasing Maggie to get the necessary buffer to survive."Hollow Man 2" is inferior to the original, but entertains. The predictable and forgettable story has flaws and very few special effects, but it is not so bad as indicated in many reviews. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "O Homem Sem Sombra 2" ("The Man Without Shadow 2")
