The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.

This is a cult film that starts out a little confusing with flashbacks. About 30 minutes into the film Aman (Wesley Snipes) explains the plot. A woman (Alyssa Pridham), near and dear to Aman is raped by a gang of five men, so that the leader's son could "become a man."Aman enacts revenge on the group of men. However, in this region the dead come back to life (plot point loosely explained at beginning and end of film) and are known as "gallowwalkers" ignoring the fact the word is actually "gallows." Needless to say, the dead want to kill Aman as he hunts them down again. Aman recruits assistance in Kansa (Kevin Howarth). The plain desert background provided for some great color contrasts, especially the reds, whites, and purples. This is not a zombie film per se, but there are living dead who walk, talk, and die similar to living people. There is graphic blood and body part scenes, but this is not a slasher or typical grindhouse. It takes place out west, but is clearly not a classical western. The film is a hybrid. It combines aspects of multiple films and makes a production for a narrow audience. The flashback aspect, i.e. keeping the viewer hanging for thirty minutes as they try to figure out what is happening didn't work well.Parental Guidance: F-bomb, rape, brief nudity.

WARNING: THIS REVIEW MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS...Back in the 90's, Wesley Snipes could do no wrong. He was an action star headlining major Blockbusters like Passenger 57, Demolition Man, and Rising Sun to name a few... Somewhere along the line, it all started to go downhill and in my opinion, it started with the Blade franchise. By the third Marvel entry, Snipes was demoted to a co-star, the film killed the franchise, and that was the last studio film we saw Snipes release. What followed were a string of low budget, overseas action films like Unstoppable, Art of War 2, and Game of Death. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed most of them for what they were and I'm a huge fan of Snipes, so when I first heard of Gallowwalkers, I got really excited. I mean the premise was killer. A gunfighter killing the undead... What could go wrong? It turns out... Everything... The film sat on the shelf for 5 years and I finally watched it after all that time. While there were moments of "what could have been", the film was certainly dismal at best. My biggest problem with the film is that it certainly had the resources to be great, sweeping deserts, sets that were built by hand, great wardrobe, great locations... The only problem was the story felt very botched and most of what is seen in the film seemed to be footage that was shot to fill up the running time and Mr. Snipes, as good as he was in the parts he was in, wasn't present enough throughout to keep the viewer interested. (I'm assuming this is due to his legal troubles at the time). The story generally followed a younger apprentice and a bunch of odd characters. As I said, it's worth a watch if you need to kill some time or you're just a hardcore Snipes fan like me, but if you're looking for something edgy and intriguing, this is not it. I give it a 4 out of 10.

Cursed with a rare ability, a gunman who finds his victims returning to life as zombies plan to overtake the sacred grounds of his origin and break the barrier to let the dead souls return to Earth, forcing him to action to stop them.Overall this one was quite a disappointing but still enjoyable enough effort that has some decent elements for it. The biggest factor for this one is the absolutely kinetic comic-book style throughout this one here, which tends to leave this one with a distinct visual style throughout the action on display which is quite fun here. There's the type of appearance that suits the villains throughout here which is very apparent in the way they come back to life as different zombies which meshes quite well with the graphic kills, rampant action scenes and the old-west setting being quite well utilized by this one to make for quite a fine time here. That first part, about the different zombie appearance on display offers up another stellar point in the film by offering a rather gruesome series of main villains that effectively make an impression here as to inspiring fear in others, as the lizard-like skin, battle ornaments and even masks and helmets come into play here which makes them quite imposing and definitely creepy, especially given the Old-West setting which is quite well utilized here as it makes for quite an enjoyable time overall here utilizing this kind of setting for all the different action scenes here which makes this one quite enjoyable. These here are what make it enjoyable, though there's some big flaws here that hold it down. The main factor against this one is the fact that there's just no story at work within this, as events tend to come and go without any explanation or force acting on the rest of the events that play out here leading things to just happen without reason. There's little told here about what they're trying to do in the town, why they need the radical Christian group or even why he's cursed to have those killed come back to life. We're told the curse has a part of it but there's little here that makes sense as to why that would befall him in the manner depicted or why that would bother him in the first place which tends to make their motivations simply being killing random people innocently and having him play a hero of some kind which is quite telling of the story as a whole. This is also confusing in what happens to the zombies here as they're quite far removed from what is normally considered zombies as they're basically the same person only with lizard-like contact lenses and a more invulnerable-but-not-invincible body that can be wounded more than normal but still die, are allowed to talk and think like people and aren't in the slightest bit worried about eating flesh which tends to make them quite different from what's normally found in the genre with no reason again for offering this kind of change. The last factor here is the rather pedantic and relaxed pace throughout here which tends to really take it's time going anywhere and not really offering the kind of action-packed spectacle that would've benefited from this kind of set-up, which might also have to do with the lame story as well. Otherwise, this one wasn't all that bad.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Language, Brief Nudity and children-in- jeopardy.

I wanted to check this movie out because I thought the trailer looked cool, a unique storyline, maybe a little cheesy but still interesting. With a big name like Wesley Snipes, I thought it had a chance even with the low ratings. Boy was I wrong! The mostly nonsensical storyline was not well put together. It had many unexplainable plot holes like the undead coming back to life for an unknown reason killing to take peoples skins. The acting was simply horrid. The dialogue was unintelligent and with the terrible accents and out of sync speech, it made even the good lines stupid. All the effects were poorly done from fake looking graphics to corny makeup and lousy costuming. (Some good examples being the reptilian lizard skin man, or the dark skinned kid with white dreads) The action was just as bad as the rest of it with substandard fight scenes. The standoffs which are usually a highlight in westerns had little to no intensity whatsoever, which ruins the whole point and atmospheric mood.It quickly caused me to lose all interest, and the ending was extremely un-climactic.One plus was that they had some excellent desert scenery and backgrounds. If only something good could be said about the rest of this lame flick.
