Farewell to the Moon Trailers

It's the hot summer of 1972: the Americans launch their last mission to the moon; also a time of dungarees and hallucinogenic wallpaper. On the eighth floor of a new Dutch apartment block, 12-year-old Duch lives with his family. His hobbies are space travel and Mary, the pretty woman next door. Duch’s father prefers to watch the neighbour who recently moved in two doors down. Her arrival makes the residents aware of the free-sex morality. Up until now it had left the eighth floor untouched, but that is clearly not to everyone’s satisfaction.

It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,

Reminiscent of 'The ice storm' (though the weather conditions are quite the opposite) and 'A serious man' (the woman on the poster for instance looks like a copy of Larry's sunbathing neighbor). Two films that are actually brilliant, but unfortunately, 'Afscheid van de maan' (farewell to the moon) is not.Not at all? Well, there is plenty of atmosphere most of the time (too contrived at other times), some lines are striking and funny, the premise is pretty decent and I didn't lose interest in how things would work out, but somehow it just didn't come together. The characters of Bob and his wife for instance, are at times too much, as was the way the story was supposed to come together. The idea of keeping most scenes in and around the one setting of an apartment building, and that simultaneously withca space project going on the moon (and television) was pretty good, though. As a drama it fails to deliver, but as a an atmospheric take-me-back with some weirdly funny moments it was just about doable. 5 out of 10.
