Really Surprised!

... View MoreJake West, an amateurish director whose budgets are slowly increasing (he started out with RAZOR BLADE SMILE and has since gone on to cinematic success with DOGHOUSE), is the man behind this vapid, nonsensical slice of sci-fi comedy with liberal amounts of gross-out humour and bloodshed. It's an obvious riff on Peter Jackson's BAD TASTE, but largely made without the kind of imaginative effort that went into that Kiwi comedy.Indeed, the first half of this film is pretty diabolical. We're deep in the world of zero-budget filmmaking, with amateur actors giving wooden performances and the almost total absence of any kind of script. The aliens, who arrive on earth courtesy of some tacky CGI UFO, are keen to use anal drills on humankind in the openly disgusting opening. West might be a passable director, but his script sucks and takes an age to get to the second half, which is where the film hits its stride: basically, this is a story of humans battling an alien invasion, done on an almighty small scale. The familiar face in the cast is horror host Emily Booth, looking lovely and having fun in her role. Surrounding her are the usual stereotypes – UFO nerd guy, animal-loving Welsh inbred farmer, bimbo, gay star. The aliens are people in shiny suits wearing masks. What follows is bloodshed and more bloodshed, with entrails being thrown through the air and limbs and heads being regularly chopped off as the low-rent antics continue. It's all rather dumb, but the second half is well paced and slightly watchable, unlike the execrable first half. The highlight is undoubtedly the 'combine harvester massacre', which surpasses the material and becomes rather fun, if derivative. The rest is nonsense.
... View MoreEvil Aliens starts as Weird Word TV show presenter Michelle Fox (Emily Booth) gets an ultimatum from her boss (Norman Lovett) who says get a good story or get fired, Michelle has a potential story about a girl named Cat (Jennifer Evans) who lives on a farm on a Welsh island & claims that she was abducted by Aliens & impregnated while her boyfriend was murdered. Desperate for a scoop Michelle & her crew travel out to the farm & discover that Cat's story is true & the evil Aliens return & the human inhabitants of the island have to fight for their lives as the Aliens kill every living thing they come across...This British production was written, edited & directed by Jake West & is a full on splatter horror comedy that is surprisingly quite good, I certainly won't be giving it eight or nine out of ten like some on the IMDb but it's a good effort & pretty good fun if your in the mood for a gory sci-fi horror that doesn't take itself seriously & has a few laughs. The film has a fun story about various over-the-top character's including a UFO geek, some inbred Welsh farmers & a mad sound guy trying to survive when killer Aliens land. The script is packed with film references & homages from Night of the Living Dead (1968) to Braindead (1992) & Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) as well as loads of other's, this is a film for fans & I am sure any self respecting sci-fi & horror fan will notice multiple references, gags, send-ups & homages. There's plenty of comedy here too, while it doesn't always hit the mark there are a few amusing scenes here & the film strikes a nice balance between horror & comedy. At about 90 odd minutes it's not too long & has a good pace, the character's are memorable & I liked the way the script splits them up & we follow them as they try to survive. I didn't think the story was that good, it doesn't really make much sense although I did think there was a quite clever twist ending which I found amusing.Although shot on video Evil Aliens looks quite good & has nice production values for a low budgeter, the CGI computer effects although not brilliant are alright (well, except for that awful explosion at the end). There's lots of gore here too, there are ripped-off arms, ripped-off heads, shootings, someone has a drill like Alien anal probe inserted, stomachs are cut open, legs are ripped-off, a guy is raised up on a stake, there's a gory scene involving a combine harvester & there's loads of blood splatter. There is an outrageous sex scene between a guy & a triple breasted Alien female that has to be seen to be believed. One problem I do have though is that some of the set-pieces are very badly edited with quick cuts & annoying camera angles which makes things difficult to follow with knowing who is who in particular. With a supposed budget of about $1,800,000 there's plenty of set-pieces, special effects & gags on screen. Filmed on location here in the UK. The acting is alright & hot looking telly presenter Emily Booth stars although she acts like she is presenting a TV show rather than trying to be natural but that doesn't really matter.Evil Aliens is a fun horror comedy with lots of bad taste gags & gore but not much of a story & it did leave me feeling a little empty once it had finished, as long as you don't take it seriously & enjoy the horror or sci-fi genres then you could do a lot worse than this. Better than I expected & well worth a watch.
... View More...but nowhere near deserving the cult status that some might claim for it, "Evil Aliens" manages to merit a cheap viewing, although preferably the cheaper the better. Would-be auteur Jake West, who apparently wants to be Britain's answer to Peter Jackson (or more likely someone on the level of Uwe Boll) has blessed the world of cinema with yet another splatter comedy. The focus this time is on (what else?) contact with extra-terrestrials with a decidedly hostile bent, who mostly wear cut-rate Predator costumes, fly around in (surprisingly effective) CGI spaceships that draw power from the Earth's magnetic field (I think) and are controlled by a large, unprotected brain (presumably alien, but who knows?) A small band of low-rent actors make up the erstwhile heroes (and alien fodder) who end up defeating this menace after numerous gooey encounters of the worst kind. This is one of those films that I find very frustrating. At times shot quite beautifully by West conspirator Jim Solan, "Evil Aliens" intermittently looks as cheap as anything shot by an eager film student in his or her backyard. The sfx range from nauseating realism to cartoonish absurdity, slopping back and forth almost willy-nilly. The acting is pedestrian at best, but mostly embarrassing. West's direction is haphazard and mostly ineffective, but that comes as little surprise given the quality of his script (which is to say, debatable).I've seen much worse in my day, and I've certainly seen better. One need only look at any of the truly classic lo-fi films ("Night of the Living Dead" and "The Evil Dead" spring instantly to mind) to see what a good script and acting that transcends amateurism can do. "Evil Aliens," though stuffed with homages to other films of its ilk (mostly others that are vastly superior), falls flat on its face in terms of "memorable." In aping and referencing identifiable genre favorites, "Evil Aliens" fails to establish any identity of its own. Most certainly, I couldn't rate it higher than a "5" since it's quite obviously sub-par, little more than an adequate time-killer for genre fans and insomniacs with a strong stomach for grue. If Mr. West actually had any sort of reputation, I'd have to rate "Evil Aliens" lower, if only to help differentiate it from similar films that still manage to transcend themselves with above-average talent and vision. Mr. West may yet have a good film in him, somewhere, but "Evil Aliens" wasn't it.
... View MoreI usually check reviews prior to renting films, I had read a couple reviews on Evil Aliens so I thought I was in store for a zombie movie, boy was I wrong, dead wrong.Evil Aliens tells the story of Michelle Fox, a sleazy reporter hell bent on getting the perfect story. After Michelle gets a lead that a pregnant girl claims to be bearing an alien child, she packs up her crew and heads to the remote island to get the perfect story. Suddenly Michelle finds herself in deliverance country and that's about the time when the movie gets bloody, and I mean bloody! Evil Aliens is a mi-sh mash of sci-fi, horror and comedy and an pays an exuberant amount of homage to Dead Alive, Bad Taste, Evil Dead, Night of the Creeps, there's so many I can't name them all. This homage routine works well in the beginning but steadily becomes played out. Yes we get it; Jake West likes horror movies. The over indulgence of blood, especially sprayed in the face of the character becomes numbing, this effect is done so frequently, that after the 15th time it becomes annoying, seriously 15th times if not more.Jake West does manage to do a great job with the special effects, makeup, character development and sets, the detail inside of the alien's ship is phenomenal and the alien's costumes are realistic as it gets. It balances the sci-fi and horror genre well and throws a mix of comedic overtones which makes it a fun fast paced film. Unfortunately Evil Aliens is far from perfect; the acting is rigid and in some cases the computer animation is ridiculous, but the biggest problem is originality. Evil Aliens borrows so much from its predecessors, it just becomes predictable. However any horror or sci-fi fan (Sci-fi fan as in Aliens, Life Force, etc. not Star Trek or Dune) can overlook these slight imperfections and enjoy. I even found a pretty fun drinking game online, so be sure to get some brew and a couple friends together and check out Evil Aliens, it might even be better when you're drunk?
