n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.
... View Morea film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
... View MoreIt's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
... View MoreStory: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
... View MoreLike Hotel Rwanda, I was required to see this. However-I saw this at church camp. I understood the plot, and there were good scenes sprinkled throughout, but I was uninterested most of the time. If you want a better missionary themed movie-you can see The Mission-which was nominated for Best Picture for 1986, and Martin Scorsese's Silence from 2016-which is the best movie I have ever seen. Those are better movies with the same theme.Stick to seeing those if you are looking for recommendation-because sorry, I can't give it to you.
... View MoreWhere can I start...Oh yes the dialogue...the narrator resorted to lines such as "the tribe has lived here since the beginning of time", and the missionary father says to sun with reference to the distance the earth is to the sun.."you know that's only a fraction of the amount I love you" - ah yes it's bad. The historical/anthropological aspects of the film are decent but I don't know how much to believe yet and clearly the missionary enterprise can only bring good to the "natives"- I say that with a volumes of sarcasm. The ending is somewhat lackluster and is suspect for Christian propaganda. This film is really not worth watching, in fact I would rather spend the time viewing cheese filled 80s flick - certainly a more useful use of my time. Common people if you give this film a decent rating the standards have certainly gone down Sorry to the missionaries out there....
... View MoreWithout going into technical aspects and the like, because in this instance that sort of thing is secondary at best, this movie is extremely well done. But that isn't the point here really. The real point is that its done in such a way that ... You're THERE. You FEEL it, SEE it, HEAR it. Its one of those flicks that sucks you in and makes you a part of it. It makes a point, and it does that without beating anyone over the head with someone else's morality. That was a very pleasant surprise for me. This is a film that is well worth the view. Side note: Most of the players? Never heard of 'em. Any disappointments in that? Not one.
... View MoreWhy do filmmakers take the trouble to go to exotic locations, use the native language of the characters in the film, then cast non-native actors in many of the roles? The whole effect is ruined. It is as jarring as when old Hollywood cast Susan Hayward as a Mongol princess, and various blond blue eyed Caucasians natives of India or the South Sea Islands. Mel Gibson did exactly the same with Apocalypto. To make it even more ridiculous, the non-natives usually cannot speak the tribal language which affects their performance. Louis Leonardo and Christine Sousa may be good actors, but they do not look like Amazonians. Their characters physical appearance might have been credible as mixed race offspring of workers in an Amazon shanty town and their native wives, but not in an isolated jungle tribe which we are led to believe had no prior contact with civilization.Casting gripes aside, I did not realize before I saw it that this was a religious themed film, but they fortunately kept the preaching to a minimum. Films with a religious message are frequently appallingly amateurish with characters walking around with beatific smiles on their faces while turning the other cheek to adversity. If you have watched St. Theresa you will know what I mean. The only problem other than the casting, was that I could not follow what was going on most of the time. There was no explanation of who the white men with guns were, or why they were killing the natives. the story seemed to jump about all over the place with no explanation for who was doing what and why. All I could do was sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Panama.
