Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.

If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.

if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

The presence of monolithic Jean Reno made me fear the worst.Although it looks towards the American thrillers, "L'Empire des Loups" ,has some good ideas going for it: a female lead who is not decorative is cause for celebration;the first part which deals with her hallucinations, her relationship with the shrink and the visit to the biologist are interesting enough, even if snatches of "Jacob's ladder' and of too many "amnesia movies" emerge. The second part is less satisfying :the writers reveal the truth much too soon, and leave no place for doubt.Jean Reno's as inexpressive as ever does not help .But even in this second "action-packed " eventful" part, where the frail young woman is turned into a "Nikita" ,there's a welcome depiction of terrorism and the way they indoctrinate young minds (see also for that matter the highly superior "killer kid" ).The giant cave/skull is not bad either as a metaphor of fanaticism.I would not watch that twice, but you can save it for a rainy day.

This excellent thriller owes most of the credits to it's author (the book) Jean Christophe Grange and actor Jean Reno. You will find some similarities of the film with Crimson Rivers, which is also based on Grange's book and Jean Reno played the lead character Commissioner Pierre Niemans. Like Crimson Rivers, the movie begins with seemingly two different events and a pair of cops trying to unravel the mystery. Anna Heymes (Arly Jover), the wife of a respected government official Laurent (Philippe Bas) is having a rare amnesia and nightmarish hallucinations of horrible murders, while in the Turkish neighborhood of Paris, Police Captian Paul Nerteaux (Jocelyn Quivrin) is trying to solve the possible serial killings of the illegal Turkish women with the help of an ex-cop Jean-Louis Schiffer (Jean Reno), who is also an expert in Turkish underworld and organized crime. Eventually these two seemingly unrelated worlds begin to collide into a web of danger and dark mysteries. As usual, Grange's work made this movie a cerebral action thriller. Cherish it.

Although this movie is in French and dubbed in English, the most important thing required to enjoy this movie is using the English subtitles even though the speech is in English...the voice over seems to be competing with the background movie sound (rain, music) so it is difficult to make out the conversations without it.The movie is a bit difficult to follow during the first portion of the movie, but that alone is usually a positive for me as this isn't a movie whose plot is known 10 minutes into the movie. The movie takes place predominantly in France, so the scenery is pleasant. Due to the voice over, the dialog is sub par but the pace and mystery of the movie is very good and the story line isn't bad for a thriller type movie. The biggest disappointment for me was not having Jean Reno dub his own voice, but other than that, I did enjoy the movie.

My husband, who's french, commented at the end of the movie: "Of all the things I don't get about about this film, the biggest one is why Jean Reno signed on to do it." It's entertaining enough if you compare it to other sub-grade action flicks. What it's not is a Fifth Element, Mission Impossible, The Professional, Face-Off, Bourne Anything, Heat, or anything remotely decent in between, altho it aspires to be all... but falls short of not-even-close. So if you're looking to be wowed in the french-movie-action sense, skip it. Best time to put it on? Muted during a party when everyone else is busy doing something else... the gunshooting and flashbacks make for good lighting.
