Maverick Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Dodge will never be a textbook officer, but he's a brilliant seaman who's always wanted to command a nuclear submarine — he's been given one last chance to clean up his record. Unfortunately, Admiral Graham, his nemesis, would rather sink the fleet than give Dodge his own boat. So, Graham stacks the deck against him and assigns Dodge to the Stingray, a diesel-powered WW2 submarine that can barely keep afloat. To make matters worse, Dodge's crew is a collection of maladjusted, mistake-prone misfits. Then, he's tagged the "enemy" in a crucial war game, and ordered to take on the U.S. Navy's best.

if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

This movie is a true classic. Simply the greatest comedy film ever made. Laugh out Loud humor through out, but with a solid story and lovable (or hate-able) characters driving it. Kelsey Grammar is at his comedy best in this film, which is a parody of such films as Hunt for Red October. This movie is a true "can't miss." My personal favorite character is Nitro. A man with little to no sense of self preservation, or of pain for that mater. And no, Nitro ISN'T his nick name, but he IS working on a nickname though. This man has absorbed a LOT of voltage in his life and can even function as a human radio speaker in a pinch. Also, never eat beans on a submarine.

Lt. Cmdr. Tom Dodge (Kelsey Grammar) is assigned as Captain to the USS Stingray, an old diesel driven submarine that has seen better days. With a crew that consists only of outcasts, he is headed against the atomic powered USS Orlando, with the mission to destroy a dummy battleship.Oh, my goodness, this incredible cast: Bruce Dern, William H. Macy, Patton Oswalt, Rob Schneider, Harry Dean Stanton, Rip Torn and others. Even if the film is not that great (and many would say it is not), the sheer breadth of characters aboard the ship is sure to please. The inclusion of Lauren Holly in unfortunate. Not because she is a bad actress, but because hr character merely exists to be a sexual object. Sure, the film is now almost twenty years old (this is 2014), but were we not already past such things in the 90s?

I love this comedy every time I see it. But I am confused about the timing of the infamous tattoo. Admiral Graham (Bruce) said that Dodge (Kelsey) got so drunk as an ensign that he had "Climb Aboard" tattooed you-know-where, and then he added that only three years ago Dodge brushed up against a Soviet sub. But Dodge told Lake that he got over the brushing incident by getting drunk and a tattoo, (which he didn't recommend), and he began explaining the tattoo at the end of the movie by saying that it happened after the Murmansk incident. But that would mean that he was many years past being a mere ensign (no disrespect). Still, an excellent movie, and Holly Lauren, later the Director at NCIS, looked great as a busty blonde, didn't she?

This is a really good submarine movie, in the tradition of +DestinationTokyo +Run Silent, Run Deep +Gray lady downAltho the crew is a bunch of "characters" -- just like many war movies -- they are not really a bunch of screw-ups. Kelsey Grammar plays it straight, and he seems to be the kind of skipper we would all like to have. For me, the movie delivered 110% -- I don't have much patience for nonsense anymore, but this one was GREAT!! Settle down and watch it like it deserves.Rick Jolley Tombstone, AZ
