... View MoreOpening scene: Jude Law gets a blowjob in prison and while he is at it, he is praising his c*ck. Praising it in a way a painting or another work of art should get praised. Very coarse and obnoxious, but in a hilarious way. That is to say if you are into blunt drunk violent behaviour. It is all done to correctly portray the working class violent gangster Jude Law. The story: Jude Law, playing an obnoxious, violent gangster who has just been released out of jail after a 12 year prisonterm. Jude Law kept his mouth shut during his 12 years prison term to protect a crime boss. Now he is a free man again and comes to collect a reward for his 12 years of silence. Things go terribly awry however once he is about to collect his reward at the villa of the crimeboss. How bad things turn out to go wrong, THAT is what this ludicrous, terrific story is all about. One of his best roles ever. Surprising role, because Jude Law has always portrayed the more sophisticated characters in the past. His obnoxious, rude character in "Dom Hemingway" is hilarious though. Further on in the movie the gentler side of this rude gangster is revealed in a very charming and endearing way. What makes this movie go beyond just another gangster portrait is the fact that Jude Law tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. Will he succeed in winning her trust back again after 12 years in prison? Or will he keep on going down the drain in endless bar fights and failed heists? Not suited for the faint of hearted who might easily get offended by swear words. The movie must have broken an absolute record in swearing. I loved it. The director/writer truly made an art in writing the most eloquent, stinging cussing dialogues.Endnote: Lots of good punkrock bands are present in the soundtrack. Terrific music. Exactly suited to be the backdrop of this working class gangster from the eighties. Loved it.
... View MoreThis was Jude Law at his best!! He should have won an Oscar. I was shocked to see him look so normal. We are used to the pencil thin body without any hairs out of place. He always looks so immaculate. In this movie though, he looked like a normal guy. When he was at his wife's grave talking to her and realizing how much he had messed up and broke down crying, I cried with him. Seeing him explode in his rants and then to watch him in this scene. Well he was just brilliant. I loved the movie and loved him in the movie. If you get an opportunity to watch this movie, don't pass it up. You won't be sorry. My friend and I loved it so much, we're going to watch it again right now.
... View MoreDom Hemingway is a movie with a lot of dark humor and a main character who has no fear to say what comes into his mind. Some hilarious scenes do happen, but the overall is a movie which the story isn't well developed. The best of the movie is Jude Law being Dom Hemingway. His performance, one of the best of his career, is what outshines everything. The character is a very rude guy, he's disrespectful and almost every time he speaks we feel the character's rage and due to this rage, a lot of curses, insults comes out of his mouth. Jude Law's performance made the character more believable, because he successfully created a character that from how he was communicating, both verbally and physically, we could notice what was his emotions. The friendship between Dom Hemingway and Dickie Black (Richard E. Grant) is odd, because of the swearing they say to each other, but even with the curses, we notice a real companionship among these two persons. In the beginning, I had fun watching Dom's behavior but the as the film progressed the insults weren't as funny as in the beginning. The tone changes during the film, and it's not done correctly. It seems like in a part of the movie there's a furious, fearless and rude Dom Hemingway and the other part has a sad, seeking forgiveness and regretted guy. If done properly, it would make the film much more interesting and might create a character who would be more remarkable and significant.
... View MoreFlat, stagy, overacted & underwritten, this thing plays out for the most part as a junior high school attempt at imitating Guy Ritchie. I mostly agree with the reviewer who said he expected Guy Ritchie & got Will Ferrell, except that Will Ferrell does manage to be funny which I don't think Jude Law succeeds at at all. There was really no plot to speak of, just a very tired & very old cliché about some stolen money but the whole sequence of events unrolls so choppily & the Dom Hemingway character is so overwrought & unsympathetic, you wind up rooting for the wrong people (or no one - just for the bloody film to end already). Nothing redeeming in this thing. Saw it all better in Sexy Beast & that was no great shakes either but at least Kingsley can be truly menacing, not just pathetic like an overweight Jude Law.
