Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies

Wow, where to begin with this movie... I took my two kids, Leliana and Tony, to see it in theaters and we were not disappointed! This movie was perfect for my kids, cause they love dolls and stuff like that. It was very family-friendly, taught good lessons about being nice to old people, and it even inspired my daughter's new hobby of collecting dolls! Billy is just so charming, with his little tuxedo and red bow-tie. I think it's funny that this movie got misplaced in the "horror" genre.Anyways, 10/10! Very cute movie.*Ok, but seriously, this movie scared the crap out of me...

Being a fan Leigh Whannell I didn't doubt I would likely enjoy this movie. I cannot be anything more than true to myself and say I though it was brilliant. For me a horror movie isn't a realistic dramatic masterpiece, it must have some kind of imagination and creation to its story. I think dead silence did very well in that respect. The story, although it follows the typical horror movie path, does veer off into something a little more fresh. Going in deeper than normal into certain characters back story is a great addition. This movie has some really great old skool scares. So if you like the jumpy horror movies like I do then give it a try.

Dead Silence has a simple story-line and I really dug it. Jamie Ashen's (Ryan Kwanten) wife is murdered a few minutes into the film. The distraught Jamie heads home to find out more about the creepy ventriloquist dummy that showed up at his doorstep... minutes before his wife died. What follows is a tense journey into a small hick town with a bumbling detective (a scene stealing Donnie Wahlberg) hot on Ashen's trail. This ghost tale focuses on dead Ventriloquist Mary Shaw. Shaw had no children so she treated her dolls like her family. Oh, and apparently after she croaked she decided to haunt the lives/dreams of people from her hometown. According to a children's poem if you ever see her in your dreams, you shouldn't ever scream... or she'll kill you.The film had the touch of classic fifties and eighties horror films which I think it paid great homage to. If you've been missing good old-fashioned horror flicks without all that ultra violence, this movie's for you. Kwanten is very believable as the protagonist. Wahlberg, whose screen time is minimal, steals the scene every shot he gets. The supporting cast is filled with familiar faces and does a good job as well. The special effects were nicely done and the doll designs oozed creepiness to boot. The dolls in this movie are truly creepy, and if that's what you're after, plan yourself a marathon of certain episodes of The Twilight Zone, X-Files, the 70's classic Magic, and of course, Dead Silence as the cherry on top.Overall rating: 8 out of 10.

The movie begins with a quote: "In the 6th Century B.C. it was believed that the spirits of the dead would speak through the stomach region of the living. From the Latin VENTER for 'belly' and LOQUI 'to speak' Hence the word VENTRILOQUIST" Hollywood is always looking for a new vessel for evil spirits. The doll project has already been done but apparently not in this manner. Not long into the movie a ventriloquist doll is delivered to the doorstep of Jamie Ashen (Ryan Kwanten) and his wife Lisa (Laura Regan). Shortly after that the wife dies a horrible death and Jamie looks like the main suspect. The story was essentially about a woman named Mary Shaw who wrought havoc upon the people of Ravens Fair after her death. There was even a poem about miss Mary, "blah blah blah Mary Shaw. Something or other don't scream." It was there as a poor attempt to drum up more intensity and fear. The whole story, as well as the characters, was stale. For some reason we were supposed to care about Jamie and his quest to find out about the doll and the death of his wife. Donnie Wahlberg, clearly in the movie for comic relief, played a Columbo style detective (sloppily dressed and everything) investigating Jamie for the murder of his wife. His character adds nothing to the movie except a paltry attempt at believability--in other words a woman can't wind up dead with no tongue without someone having committed the murder. The movie meanders on with Jamie pursuing answers and Det. Lipton pursuing him. There's some spooky stuff, jump scares, deaths and mercifully the movie ends. In the end there is a bit of a twist. The twist was kind of cool but because I didn't particularly like the story it was wasted. Dead Silence was a dud.
