Apart all scientific terms used by the crew member of institute of geologic survey is quite sure technically right, all special effects are great but when the pickup driven by Brosnan overcame a track of hot volcanic lava crossing the road, plus a little boy around 11 years old driving a van in dangerous road try to saves his grandmother.plus in the poisoned lake scene, plus saving the dog on the road and finally reaching the old mine where the car is almost crushed by heavy rock is certainly to misuse our capacity of faces such absurd facts.....this is outrage with the audience!!!Unbelievable at most!!!First watch: 1998 / How many: 3 / Source: TV-Cable TV-DVD / Rating: 5.5

My rating's a 4.5. This one's very entertaining and is well built up (applause). It has great special effects and good acting. My problems with it are during the climax. First the WALL holds up for them just long enough for them to casually make it down the stairs upon leaving the house, then the BOAT holds up just long enough for them to make it to the DOCK which holds up just barely long enough. Finally, they crash into the MINE just barely in time, which holds up from caving in just long enough for Harry to make it back to the truck to turn the signal on. Also, at the beginning of the climax, don't keep trying, until every person's had his turn, to get a hold of the grandma. If she hung up on someone (Harry), showing how stubborn she's being, what makes them think anyone else will have any better luck? It's stupid and a waste of time. And I like how the climax is based around them going up the mountain for the stubborn grandma who doesn't even make it down with them, being dumb enough to hop into the acidic water. Lastly, the drive over the mostly- dried-up lava on the road is so much garbage. Those tires would've popped well before they made it across.

Gather your essentials, and your loved ones, and get the hell out of here! Eruption is on the rise in Ronald Donaldson's Dante's Peak, which puts a town of the same name at risk of destruction from a once dormant volcano that is coming out of hibernation. Dante's Peak lies in the Cascade mountains in Northern Washington. In the midst of the town's festival, the United States Geological Survey receives seismic activity readings that must be addressed. Their best scientist, Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan), is sent to investigate the situation. He is welcomed, and ushered around town, by Mayor Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton), who may or may not catch feelings for the presumed hero. After running tests, and making observations, Dalton is highly concerned with the activity the mountain is displaying. However, his team does not share the same concern, and they do not back up his idea to alert the town of the possible risk. With the town on the verge of substantial growth due to a major development, the council does not want to disrupt the community. Well, this decision turns out to be the wrong one, and calamity erupts throughout the town, along with the volcano. After complete destruction of the town, Harry Dalton manages to escape death, and save Rachel and her children. But what about the facts? How accurate can this volcanic event be?From what I have gathered, the eruption seems fairly accurate, to some extent. The volcano is a stratovolcano, which produces explosive eruptions with pyroclastic flows, tephra, and lava flows. Tephra is any debris that becomes airborne in an eruption such as, ash and rock. Flooding from the melting of snow, and ice caps, due to the release of extremely hot gases from beneath the crust is an actual possibility that the movie displays. However, the lava flow scene might not be as accurate. Given the type of volcano, lahar flows that are thick, debris filled flows that move slowly, are the type of flow that should have been depicted. The flows in the film moved at a much faster pace. Also, in a scene where Harry and his new friends are trying to make it back down the mountain, they are cutoff by lava flow, and he decides to drive across it. The truck would have never made it across. Heat from the lava can reach well over 1000ºF, and would have destroyed the vehicle. Hey, it is Hollywood, right?Despite a few inaccuracies, the film provides a pleasant, engaging experience and is overall a good movie. I recommend anyone to view Dante's Peak, and experience a nice natural hazard thriller. It may just spark an interest in geology, and volcanology for some. On a scale of five stars, I give it four stars.

Dante's Peak Movie Review Recently, in class we watched Dante's Peak as part of our "Volcanoes and Earthquakes" topic. I went into class with low expectations that were quickly heightened when I watched this masterpiece of a movie. Drama, romance, action and horror in ONE movie! What more could you want? Both educational and exciting, this movie ticks all the boxes! For geography or science enthusiasts, you'll find Dante's Peak almost 100% accurate, give or take a few scenes. From PH tests to Sulphur Dioxide – this movie's informative, yet appealing to the naive eye. Although, I'm not sure a truck could survive driving through lava…. Not only does this movie feature amazingly talented actors and actresses but also a perfectly portrayed plot! Pierce Brosman stars as the lead role, Harry, a vulcanologist who becomes romantically involved with Rachel, the mayer and coffee shop owner, played by Linda Hamiliton who's famous for her appearance in the "Terminator" movies. Not everything's fun and games though! With a pyroclast killing Harry's previous girlfriend and now a supposedly "dormant" volcano threatening to wipe out an entire area of people! I'm definitely not a big fan of gore but even I agree they could have had more. What there was plenty of though, was explosive scenes that could easily have you cowering behind a pillow. My favourite moment was when the grandmother, known as Ruth sacrificed herself by sliding into acidic waters. Even though the scene was not truly accurate, it still reduced me to tears. She's a truly talented actress and my favourite character by far as she gave a heartfelt performance. I'd definitely recommend this movie to anybody (except young children) but hold on because this volcano will blow your socks off!
