Sorry, this movie sucks

... View MoreThis is ultimately a movie about the very bad things that can happen when we don't address our unease, when we just try to brush it off, whether that's to fit in or to preserve our self-image.
... View MoreI've never supposed that I'll disgust a Binoche characters' movie; I've never believe that Irons could be so lost and clumsy in a role play; I've neither could imagine me so ashamed of others thankful a Male's direction; But the hard true that really hurts everyone who resign yourself to write about their sad trauma is: To the hell with all alleged moral (or immoral, whatever) values about the story, who think that's the point! The tragic drama, here, is only the horrible work played (acting) specially by the (bizarre) love triangle and the movie's direction. Unfortunately, speaking about the love scenes, even in a Brazilian industrialized line production of serial novels is often more credible and maybe include the Mexican ones less laughable. Sorry for saying...
... View MoreJeremy Irons is wonderful as Dr. Stephen Fleming, a politician aspiring to the cabinet, a man who is good at "little things" (as his wife notes), like environmental issues, political talks in Brussels, and public relations. He also has a seemingly "perfect" family life. Miranda Richardson is very good here in an understated performance, as his wife. Also, Rupert Graves as son Martyn.Martyn meets Anna (Juliette Binoche), who dresses in black leather (rater trite, typecasting costume at first), and who immediately is attracted to Dr. Fleming although she is dating his son. There is an excellent cameo with the always lovely Leslie Caron as Binoche's infamous mother ( a fun woman married four, almost five times) who makes the mistake of mentioning that Ana has usually been attracted to "the wrong type of man" until now.She is insightful and asks Dr. Fleming to step away from her daughter so as her daughter may have a future, and happy marriage.Of course, as affairs go, the story makes sense, since it cannot be controlled, Dr. Fleming cannot stop his compulsion to be with Anna. The sex scenes are effective and not crudely done, although in the first scene as they make love, Binoche seems rather stiff as she submits to Stephen, after inviting him over to her apartment.I appreciated the realistic and sometimes sardonic nature of this film. An affair always has far reaching effects. The end is a bit of a shock but fits with the motif of this story. I had seen this film many years ago and while Juliette Binoche is lovely I sometimes had the casting idea that a different actress may have fit the wanton role more aptly, not sure who though. At any rate this is an excellent film with many gray areas, anyone who has been married and been through infidelity will appreciate the nuances of this film. 10/10.
... View MoreTake overwrought Oedipal stuff about a British minister sleeping with his son's fiancé, and subdue to a cold eroticism that holds no satisfaction in the sweat-soaked bedspreads. Break this up in so many anxieties for each character, past and present, and center around a quest for images that were dear but never quite mourned. The son wishing his disaffected father was passionate, but which we know he is exactly where he shouldn't be; her in turn, accepting to expiate the image that wracked her life with guilt by marrying it. His wife, doubly aghast, who has to mourn about the wrong loved one. So it makes some sense that Louis Malle was drawn to this project. The subtle portraits mirrored against each other in a way that they reveal a larger broken humanity, like in Atlantic City so long ago.But it does remain a film that rests with these images we are seeing, polished again to a certain cold beauty but without a certain nuance to entertain. We are meant to be heavily involved on an emotional basis for this to work, and though decent, haven't we got so many films like this?
... View MoreFrom the very beginning they are drawn to each other. "Something" at first sight. If this was not to happen, one of them would look away. An unknown need is present. The Juliet Binoche character has been through an experience of damage. If she is at all appealing, and she is, she could use saving. The Jeremy Irons character must sense this. It's up to us to determine what there is about Jeremy needing saving. There is a strong desire to save the opposite sex if one needs saving themselves. This is a requirement which must be met at all costs. I think that is the theme of this film.It is very well acted. Be careful if you are going to try and save someone that you know what you are doing lest you end up damaging yourself and all around you.
