Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

There are times during "Cyrus" where Jonah Hill says something or looks or moves a certain way that will have you laughing your guts out. He is as nuanced as a comedian gets and is the most awkward movie character I can ever remember. John and Molly, a divorced middle aged man and a single mother played by Jogn C.Reiley and Marissa Tomei meet at a friends party and start up a small relationship. All John has to do now is meet Molly's son... Cyrus. Jonah Hill as Cyrus is a riot, a comedic invention of bold creativity by the Duplass brothers who have invented a character extremely witty and unique. "Cyrus" as a film is also exceptional, exploring an awkward and dysfunctional group of people who through their uniqueness and dysfunction blend together and solve each others problems. "Cyrus" is a just a feel good movie through and through that will have you laughing fro weeks.

Anyone expecting this movie to have you laughing 'till you cry would be sadly disappointed. Despite this, the movie "Cyrus" delivers an interesting and possibly relatable story to anyone who enjoys a little but of dry humor. Many people must have been misled when they discovered that there would be a film coming out with 2 of possibly the funniest actors right now, Jonah Hill and John C. Riley. What was expected to be a raunchy, cuss filled laugh your a$$ off film like "Superbad" or "Stepbrothers" turned out to be something much better than that. This is the rare type of comedy where you laugh half as much, but find the story twice as funny. The characters, especially John and Cyrus, play their roles so genuinely, without the type of forced humor and cheesy clichè lines and development that has overtaken the industry today. The territorial feuds between Jonah Hill's character, a sheltered mommy's boy, and John, played by John C. Riley, unravels and quickly expands into a burning hatred. The humor is situational, you won't find many one-liners that get you laughing till you die, but you'll find that their characters speak much more than words and that if you are into these types of comedies, you will not only appreciate this clever film, but adore it.

Most American romantic comedies follow a very tired script: beautiful people, a dull love triangle with an evil man-in-post, stupid attempts at humour. 'Cyrus' is a welcome departure from this script: the story of a middle aged couple, and the dramatic tension is provided not by a romantic rival, but by a needy child. Unfortunately, there's not so much drama here, and I didn't completely buy the premise: in the opening section, John C. Reily's character is such a loser that it's hard to see what Marisa Tomei's character sees in him; while it's also hard to believe that she would wait 20-something years after the birth of her son before attempting another relationship. Ultimately, there's just not enough substance here to make a good film, in spite of the broadly realistic setting; and it's not really very funny either.

Yes, the movie is wrongly billed as a comedy when it clearly is a drama with a touch of humour, which probably arouse most of the frustration. But to his credit, Cyrus develops, with a real sincerity, a moving sweet-and-sour story with which anyone can identify, where dialogues are very well thought-out and sound very genuine, even though the plot is a bit simplistic in the end.The actors deliver strong performances, especially John C. Reilly who is totally accurate and particularly touching in his role. The biggest disappointment is in fact the cinematography, sometimes hesitant with those laborious focuses. The hand-held camera isn't to be blamed, but the use of quick zooms to create an ultra realistic documentary style turns out to be completely unnecessary.
