Somewhere in Hollywood around 2003 someone obviously thought it was time to remake 'Roman Holiday' for the noughties, and that thought became 'Chasing Liberty', a film that apes that classic film for all it's worth. It's not a bad film, it has some charm. Mandy Moore carries the film a lot better than she would do later in 'License to Wed' and Matthew Goode plays a sarcastic Brit well. In fact he would later play a very similar role in the Amy Adams vehicle 'Leap Year', a film he'd later slate. It's one of those teen rom-com's though where the supporting characters steal the show, and in this case it's Jeremy Piven as a FBI agent. It's not an overly original film, but it has some nice enough moments.

Charming romantic comedy which definitely shows the pitfalls when you're the daughter of the President of the United States. Besides constantly being under scrutiny, you always have to deal with the secret service. In this story, the first daughter is 18 and after her date is literally ruined by the secret service, she demands independence. Her father's idea is to have a secret service agent as her love interest and true to form, the story shows how they fall in love. She doesn't know who he is.The story is one how they go off together, but he hesitates in making love to her because of his position. With the scenes of Austria, I thought I'd hear Edelweiss and the hills are alive with the sound of music, especially when they are walking along the countryside. The picture, a good one, doesn't have terrorists lurking in the background. In fact, any trouble comes from our own Americans near the end of the cute film.

Like many other 18-year-old well-built beauties, Mandy Moore (as Anna Foster) wants to get drunk and have sex (after meeting the right guy, of course). Trouble is, she's the President of the United States' daughter. Codenamed "Liberty", Ms. Moore can't catch any privacy with US Secret Service agents protecting her tail. When Moore steps up her efforts to escape from the omnipresent agents, poppa President Mark Harmon decides to covertly keep an eye on his wayward daughter by assigning good-looking young agent Matthew Goode (as Ben Calder) to pretend he's Moore's understanding companion."Chasing Liberty" may have been a reaction to "partying" sisters Barbara and Jenna Bush, daughters of then US President George W. Bush. They are recalled as such, but the attractive "girls" were not teenagers; they were young women during their father's tenure. A Bill Clinton "sex joke" clearly indicates the Bush era is represented. The film itself is recognizable as a tired old plot, enlivened mainly by the attractive locations and Moore. Mr. Goode makes a fine partner for her. A smart father wouldn't hire tall, dark, and handsome Goode, with his sexy accent, to guard Mandy Moore, without considering the inevitable.***** Chasing Liberty (1/7/04) Andy Cadiff ~ Mandy Moore, Matthew Goode, Jeremy Piven, Annabella Sciorra

I love this movie, such a great film. It's about a first daughter struggling to find freedom (and love), a bit similar to "The President's Daughter" (stars Katie Holmes). It's a very fun and romantic film. You'll laugh a lot and maybe dreaming someday you'll have the same romance (if you're a girl)This film is very true and close to real life, especially Anna's (Mandy Moore) love and expressions and Ben's rejection then acceptance. They're just so cute together and make a great couple.I love parts where Ben and Anna are together (like the bungee jump, in Venice ...) and when Ben rescues Anna (run away on motorbike, on the roof...) But it's not just a film about Ben and Anna's love, we can also see the love of the president -as a father- for his daughter, the love of 2 agents, connections between complete strangers (McGruff)And the part about "Six Million Dollar Man Sticker" of McGruff is just so comforting and warm, lie he said "You go somewhere strange and lonely, then suddenly you see this sticker and you just know we're connected". It's just so deep.I've watched this movie again 4 times in 2 days and still not bored, recommend it for teens, couples and families, especially romantic people.
