BLIK is a very interesting cartoon about a young boy's infatuation with an older girl. She is kind to him and he falls in love with her. However, she has a motorcycle-riding boyfriend, triggering a jealous reaction. What makes this cartoon interesting is not just that there is no dialogue; there are no faces. The characters are human, but the oval areas where their faces should be are left blank. Emotions and thoughts are communicated solely through positions and movements. The people who produced this did a clever job in making it seem natural. The cartoon begins in long takes and camera angles which obscure the face. By the time you notice, you are already involved in the story.Although I usually dislike cartoons that show ordinary human beings, the decision to make the characters faceless also makes their humanity a necessity. The result is a very effective cartoon and that rare beast: an experimental film that works on its own terms.
