I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

View MoreIf you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.
... View MoreLet me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
... View MoreAn old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
... View MoreAn experiment in genetic engineering goes horribly awry and causes a slew of sheep to transform into vicious flesh-eating beasts that terrorize the New Zealand countryside. Writer/director Jonathan King relates the blithely absurd story at a zippy pace, ably maintains an engaging mock-serious tongue-in-cheek tone throughout, draws the endearingly idiosyncratic characters in colorful broad strokes, delivers oodles of outrageous graphic gore (throats are ripped open, limbs are torn off, guts are devoured, and so on), and adroitly milks the wacky dark humor for maximum belly laughs. It's the way this movie goes whole hog on the gloriously loony premise that makes this movie so funny and enjoyable: One sheep drives a pick-up truck that goes off a cliff, folks who are bitten by the sheep turn into grotesque were-sheep subhuman hybrids, sheep jump on and tackle their victims like psychotic football players, and one poor dude even has his penis bitten off by a sheep (ouch!). Moreover, it's acted with zest by an enthusiastic cast, with especially stand-out work by Nathan Meister as phobic and troubled hero Henry, Peter Feeney as smarmy yuppie Angus, Danielle Mason as feisty New Age hippie kook Experience, Tammy Davis as the jolly Tucker, Oliver Driver as obnoxious environmentalist Grant, Tandi Wright as cold-blooded scientist Doctor Rush, and Glenis Levestam as the sweet Mrs. Mac. Richard Black's crisp widescreen cinematography, the first-rate mostly practical special effects (the enormous humanoid sheep are amazing), and Victoria Kelly's spirited score all further enhance the overall sound quality of this absolute hoot.
... View More"Black Sheep" doesn't lose its appeal upon several watchings. I have seen it four times so far, and I am still thoroughly entertained by it. Why? Well, because it is sheer and straight forward fun and over-the-edge dark comedy. The story is about some shady experiments being performed on sheep somewhere in the rural New Zealand farmlands. And as luck would have it, protesting activists steal a hazardous sample from the lab and accidents follow in its wake. A strange infection starts to afflict man and sheep alike."Black Sheep" has a lot of dark comedy to its storyline and the visuals are actually quite good. And for a movie of this caliber, then the special effects are really nice and work out so nicely. There is just something very odd and uniquely distinctive to the movie, and that is what makes it work out so nicely.Sort of think "Shaun of the Dead" meets a New Zealand sheep farm, then basically you have the outlay for "Black Sheep". The movie is fast-paced, with lots of fun scenes and dialogue. Plus the characters in the movie are nicely fleshed out as well. This horror-comedy is a definite must watch for fans of the genre. You will never look at a sheep in the same way again after having seen this movie...
... View MoreThis is now already the fourth part of my little review series: Movies that are way better than you expect."Black sheep" is a very funny and extremely entertaining horror parody that comes from New Zealand. There are many crazy ideas, hilarious ideas and great jokes as well as a few entertaining characters in this movie. Just switch your brain off and get entertained on a high level. I must admit that I haven't laughed watching a movie a long time ago and this movie must be one of the most hilarious ones I have ever seen.Take the most innocent animal on earth which is a sheep and make a monster out of it that transforms egoist, capitalist and ignorant managers, scientists or farmers into were-sheep that begin to act and talk in a weird manner. Add to this simple plot a diversified team around an esoteric ecology-terrorist, a tough old housekeeper, a handsome farmer and the main actor and brother of the villain that suffers a sheep phobia and is in therapy to fight his demons. Mix great dialogues with slight gore passages, beautiful landscapes and some action and adventure scenes that are inspired by some great classics. You will be entertained every single moment and live a movie that sticks to the roots of great horror flicks and its parodies but that still offers many original ideas in a unique context coming from an exotic country. As I have never seen a better horror parody, I give a quite high rating for it even if there is a lot of easy toilet humour, some excessive gore passages and a many stereotypical characters in it. There is so much cheese added to the original ingredients that the final result turns out to be an amazing pizza that should please to almost anybody that is ready to watch some great imaginative but childish entertainment from time to time.
... View MoreWhen I discussed Eagle Vs Shark I tried my best not to pull pess out of the NZ accent - Oops I did it again! This time though the danger factor is ramped up, as Black Sheep concerns New Zealand citizens and their interactions with the noble sheep.I could be in trouble here.2 young boys grow up on a sheep farm, Henry and Angus. After a childhood sheep-related trauma (if only I had a dollar for all those I heard about) Henry moves away to the big city vowing never to return, Angus takes over running the farm once their parents pass away.Henry, now an adult, comes back to finalise the estate of his late Father and say goodbye to the farm once and for all. Of course this sets the tone for all that follows. It turns out that there is some shady scientific testing going on at the farm, and that the efforts to engineer the "perfect sheep" have resulted in some less than ideal variants being created and disposed of. Idiot-hippies (no other kind I can think of) come across such evidence and plan to use it for their protesting evidence. When the "evidence" turns out to be alive and escapes - but only after taking a nip out of one of the hippies - all sh*t breaks loose and things go baa-nanas!...Sorry.So what follows is a hell of a lot of violence against puppet sheep, and an equal amount of violence perpetrated by the suddenly savage ovine hordes against their former human tormentors. Henry, now joined by one of the hippie-idiots named Experience (told you) and the farm manager Taka seem stranded without transport and must hoof it...Sorry.There is some great gore and extremely inventive and effective makeup effects - the team behind a lot of the Lord of the Rings stuff were involved - it's all incredibly over the top and there are liberal lashings of bright blood all over the shop. All that and I didn't even mention the insinuation of human-ovine love. No wait I just did.Sorry. (But it's the truth!) Most of the jokes were lighthearted and dumb in an inoffensive way - the only joke that fell altogether flet, I mean flat for me was the use of Mint Sauce as a holy water substitute, aside from that fizzer Bleck Sheep was extremely amusing and well made. I can't go further without acknowledging the blatant rips from many other classic horror films such as Evil Dead, Tremors and An American Werewolf in London, but I'd rather watch a film that rips from the best instead of settling for mediocrity.Especially when it does so effectively and creates a minor classic like this.Final Rating - 7.5 / 10. Nothing too original, but funny and fun, and wayyy better than 100s of US or UK films made with a bigger budget but less inspiration annually.
