Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??

... View MoreThe tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
... View MoreI don't like the Smiths. I didn't want to like this film and I did. There are plot holes (its sci-fi - go figure!) The characters are emotionally leaden (they play a career army Dad and his emotionally repressed son - shock!). And, this isn't Shakespeare. You're not getting an Oscar winner here, but as far as action films go it's fair. Neither Smith is required to provide much emotion - the point is that Smith Snr has sadly drilled his son to an inch of his life in order to meet expectations. He yearns for acceptance, but is denied it by his cold father, doubly tragic due to the family being devastingly killed by ruthless aliens. Being stranded on Earth gives Smith Jnr the opportunities to change this narrative and finally be accepted. The premise is a bit dodgy, but the film is well presented. I can't say that Jayden is a bad actor, but the nepotism has never looked good.
... View MoreA crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help. I've heard all sorts of horrible things regarding 'After Earth' and to be honest i don't think that it was as bad as some viewers made it sound like. It's for sure not a masterpiece tho, it's a bit slow paced and i do wish that Will Smith did more with his role but i didn't hated his son, i think Jaden was alright in the main role and as far as visuals go this movie looks pretty damn beautiful and it's way better than some of Shyamalan's other works like 'The Happening' and 'The Village'. (7/10)
... View MoreYou would think that in the year of After Earth, there would be weapons available unless guns were outlawed by right wing politicians. This movie is the reason why we won't make it After Earth. We need to confiscate Shyamalan's camera and move him to the Village. It's quite possible that Shyamalan was the inspiration for this sad movie, because he most definitely learned to be fearless in Planet Hollywood! Good Night!
... View More'After Earth' is not a perfect film, not by any means. But for someone to say that this is the worst film of the last decade or one of the worst films of all time means that this is a grossly misunderstood film as even in its poorest moments there are still a lot of redeeming qualities to take into consideration.Like its science-fiction concept. Humankind had to evacuate planet Earth because pollution has rendered the planet inhospitable and colonise a new planet, Nova Prime. 1,000 years have passed and the year is 3071. On a mission with his son Kitai Raige to transport a contained but very hostile alien species called the Ursa, general Cypher Raiger orders the crew on his spaceship to land on our planet after being drastically hit by an asteroid shower. The twist? Well Earth has also changed in these 1,000 years free of human interference. As Cypher explains to Kitai: "This is a class 1 quarantined planet. Everything on this planet has evolved to kill humans." I won't reveal much more of the plot, but as one can see this is a very intriguing concept for a science-fiction movie. I also love the acting. This is a film that deals heavily with the relationship between father and son and there could have been few better candidates more suitable for the role than Will and Jaden Smith. A lot of people have criticized their dialogue in this movie, commenting that is not the way a father speaks to his son in real life, but have they ever considered that maybe they were supposed to sound like that? After all, Cypher is no ordinary dad. He's a general, a so-called 'Ghost', who has trained his mind not to show any fear and thus be rendered invisible to an Ursa alien, who preys on human fear and maybe emotion too. Whoever expects a normal father-son relationship in this movie is clearly barking up the wrong tree. And there is another plot detail involving Kitai's sister which I will not spoil here but which also sheds light on their strained relationship. There are some nice details complementing this movie as well. When general Cypher salutes the one-legged soldier before embarking on their mission, for instance, is a brilliant example of foreshadowing of what happens later on in the movie. All in all, 'After Earth' is an entertaining movie. It won't set the movie-going world on fire but it certainly doesn't deserve all these negative reviews.
