... View MoreIt's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
... View MoreClose shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.
... View Morewhat a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
... View MoreIts super weird how Matrix, Existenz and this movie all came out in 1999. If you enjoyed those 2, you'll probably like this one as well. I did have one problem with it tho. The adr was terrible and it constantly put me off. Other than that, it was a good sci-fi/crime.Its about a guy who is a partner in a company which is experimenting with augmented reality simulations. His boss gets murdered and he is the prime suspect. He is trying to make sense of whats going on.
... View MoreIn 1937, a man named Fuller (Armin Mueller-Stahl) gives a note to Ashton (Vincent D'Onofrio), the bartender at a swank hotel, that's addressed to Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko). Fuller tells Ashton it's crucial that no one else sees the note, and that the information enclosed is of great importance. Moments later, Fuller transports himself to 1998. He's soon found murdered, and a shirt stained with Fuller's blood is found in Hall's apartment. Fuller and Hall both work for Intergraph Computer Systems, a cutting edge artificial intelligence firm, and the "past" Fuller was visiting was actually a stunningly realistic recreation of Los Angeles 50 years ago, complete with people you can meet and places you can visit, that exists only in a microchip. The message he left with Ashton, however, is real. Some people, including LAPD detective Larry McBain (Dennis Haysbert) believe Hall murdered Fuller to assume his position of leadership at Intergraph. Jane (Gretchen Mol), Fuller's daughter, soon arrives on the scene, and Hall finds himself infatuated; Hall is determined to clear his name, so with the help of Whitney (also played by (Vincent D'Onofrio), he into the virtual 1937 in hopes of discovering just what happened. The Thirteenth Floor makes copious use of digital effects technology to allow its characters to travel between 1937 and 1998 - ironically using computer technology to create a world that exists inside a computer.
... View More"The Thirteenth Floor" is a mix of sci-fi, mystery, spiritual, romance and action. My review is mostly about a spiritual side of the plot. There are 3 main spiritual ideas in the movie: 1. Transfer of consciousness 2. Creation of virtually programmed world 3. Multi-layered realityGlued together these thrilling ideas are working entertaining, but not answering the main question: How the developers of the virtual world created a consciousness? This question is not only non-answered, but it's totally ignored and leading to the number of other doubts: 1. Where the consciousness of the virtual people disappears when an upper-level entities-hosts enter their bodies? 2. How a virtual person remembers what his host has been doing in his body? And so on We have to remember that creation of consciousness is a sacral magic with access by only ONE- our Spiritual Father. The gang of three from 1990 could build a virtual world, but could NOT create a consciousness, which means they COULD NOT move their own consciousness into the virtual world. The love represented in the plot is hastily done too: a woman from the upper layer is cheating her husband with a virtual character. Her explanation of that - the virtual character is nice, that why she falls in love with him.The movie is ended abruptly without providing any explanation what actually this multilayered "matryoshka" means. There are randomly dropped spiritually fancy words and phrases in the plot such as déjà vu, "not in this life", soul, etc. However, they are not corresponding any further explanations.I have to admit that the "vinaigrette" content has been packaged in entertaining way and probably gained a commercial success, HOWEVER, we have to be aware that trash movies could be far more dangerous than trash loans with more unpredictable and dangerous consequences for humankind. What is a learning message? I guess nobody knows. I m generously rating this movie by 2 stars for entertaining fantasy ONLY.
... View MoreIf you have seen enough VR themed movies, you won't see much new here. I would say this plot combines a number of different VR themes including a bit of Truman show thrown in.If you love the VR theme, and don't mind a movie that seems so similar to others you will enjoy this.Acting is pretty good. I especially liked the main female character - she's has charmThe plot was...well, I was a bit disappointed. I thought, well maybe this will be a film noir, a bit like Dark City ( which is awesome, see that movie :) Well, no, it felt like it was going that way, then lost it. I love the 30s and 40s movie, so was hoping for more of that feel. But, no, it wasn't quite that. It's not as good as Dark City, not as clever as Exitenze, not as novel as the Matrix, to name some VR themed movies. By the end of the movie, I felt like, there were just too many loose ends, but not everyone will feel that way - especially people new to VR movies, because they will likely overlook a lot of problems. But all VR movies have believabiltiy issues - if I had seen this before so many other VR movies, I might have overlooked some things that bugged meHeck, in spite of being disappointed due to wanting a film noir, and maybe something a bit more original I watched it to the end, which is more than I can say for a lot of movies :)I think some people will really enjoy this* A bit of spoiler alert - You know what would be refreshing? A VR movie that isn't trying to be overly plot twisty.
