Truly Dreadful Film
... View MoreIt's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
... View MoreThere is just so much movie here. For some it may be too much. But in the same secretly sarcastic way most telemarketers say the phrase, the title of this one is particularly apt.
... View MoreMostly, the movie is committed to the value of a good time.
... View MoreHorror anthology. One of the most flexible oeuvres in all of film. 26 solid filmmakers given free rein to produce something innovative. Their imagination was the limit. They could have created any kind of cosmic horror they envisioned. So why was 80% of it clumsy, heavy-handed social commentary? All of humanity's fears at your disposal and you give us "Y Is for Youth," a ten minute sequence about a teenage cutter with a bad stepfather and neglectful mother learning to find her inner strength? In all seriousness - and it was so very serious - she fantasized a giant hand emerging from under her skirt to flip them an enormous bird. It was so on-the-nose it watched like a film student's freshman project. The most annoying part was how well the film was made... it would have been much easier to swallow if the visuals had been as cheap as the content. Allow me to save you some time: all male characters are thuggish, boorish, and/or cruel. All female characters are the victims of that cruelty and many take their revenge. Subtext is non-existent. There is very little in the way of supernatural horror: most of the sequences are just normal people hurting each other. If you're a millennial and spend a lot of time on Facebook this movie will give you that same warm glow of self-righteousness that fuels your ongoing quest for a world where nothing makes you think too much. If you're looking for a creative horror movie, however, I suggest you keep looking.
... View MoreI'm a complete sucker for horror anthologies. Everything from John Carpenter's 'Body Bags' to 'Creepshow' to the recent ones of 'Trick R' Treat' and the 'V/H/S' franchise, I just love watching these talented filmmakers and writers try and scare the heck out of me with their short films, which 9 times out of ten, they succeed. But when I first watched 'The ABC's of Death' last year, it was a completely different set up.The whole gimmick with 'ABC's' is that the studio handpicks 26 directors from around the world and gives them one letter of the alphabet and a small budget. Each director has to come up with a word that starts with their letter and shoot a short between 2-6 minutes of a death related to the word they chose. It's quite an ambitious feat for the producers and one brilliant idea, because in the end, you have 26 different films from 26 different visions and directors. Some are gory, some are funny, some are bizarre, and some are completely psychotic. But one thing is for sure, every film is very entertaining. So now in 2014, we have the sequel and it's just as fun and entertaining as the first outing. With directors such as the Soska Sisters, Vincenzo Natali, Larry Fessenden, and Alejandro Brugues, these group of short films do not disappoint. Highlights that stick out is one by the Soska Sisters called 'Torture Porn', which has a beautiful young female model being ridiculed and abused by a few photographers on set, when the model turns into a tentacle raping demon on her male attackers. Another great short has two guys stranded on a paradise island alone, who are living the good life while trying to get rescued. And while it looks like it's made all in one shot, a girl washes up on shore and messes the balance between the two friends. It was quite comical and had no dialogue. Two segments that really scared me, which one started off with a young woman looking out of her high rise apartment to see a floating sphere above a neighboring building that when disappears, all of the tenants in the building turn into murderous maniacs, and they all turn to her gaze and come after her. The other segment was a black and white short that featured a Russian Roulette storyline with a big twist at the end. Other segments included giant penises, bath salts, a masked intruder with a hammer, and a claymation sketch that was one of the creepiest and weirdest things I've ever watched. The final segment was titled 'Zygote' for Z, and literally made my squirm out of my seat as one mother is literally too attached to her child who wants to move on. 'The ABC's of Death' is not for everyone, but if you're any kind of fan of horror and way- out weird stuff, then you don't want to miss this sequel. I can't wait to show this film to my unsuspecting friends late at night.
... View MoreThe idea is so great, let us gather some famous directors and let them do a short so we can compile it on a DVD. But sometimes you better watch out what you are doing, because i was looking forward to the second entry liking part 1 but after seen it I was left with a bitter feeling. For me the A en Z entry was by far the best. There are a few other ones that did deliver the gore and scare but most of the entries I asked myself, how did they ever got on this DVD. There's no gore or horror to catch. I have seen it before with the V/H/S franchise. Starting off above mediocre, part 2 being the best and part 3 sucks real hard. If you think you are going to sit and watch 2 hours of gore and horror then you are wrong. I don't mind the stop-motion shorts and done with clay, they are good but there's so much crap here that I hope part 3, which is announced already will pick up again the real horror. Maybe the Asian entries are above mediocre and do contain gore and full frontal, and A do deliver nudity and black humour, if all entries would have been done that way (or like Z) this would have been a gem but for know it's below mediocre.Gore 1,5/5 Nudity 1/5 Effects 3/5 Story 2,5/5 Comedy 0/5

The acting was pretty decent all around same with the writing which shifts from bad to good.
