Wonderful character development!
... View MoreFantastic!
... View MoreThe movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
... View MoreThis movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
... View MoreThis movie is a joke!! The best quote from this movie is, "Al Gore was always right and we just didn't listen." I want the time I spent watching this back the movie owes me that part of my life back. Please oh please if you have half a mind stay away from this flick. Meditation, sex(ugly sex at that), drugs, and blues music. In this movie the sky is literally falling since the ozone layer is depleting faster than anyone expected. This movie is to scare you into being environmentally straight. I went out and tossed some litter while driving my gas guzzler for no reason except pure spite at this movie. If everyone knew the world was ending there would be mass hysteria which includes mass murders, robberies, shootings, break-ins, rapes, no one would be working (especially delivering food or working a 7-11 also most cops would not stay away from their loved ones either). WAKE-UP!!!!!!!!!!
... View MoreWhat a disappointment. This was bad on almost every level, which is a shame because Willem Dafoe has had some excellent recent performances in Antichrist and The Hunter, but with a complete lack of any decent direction and a poor script he has little to do other than look forlorn (probably wondering how his agent managed to get him to sign up to this). Shanyn Leigh stars as his artist girlfriend who goes from placid to extremely emotional on several occasions for no real reason. The plot of the film consists of the world coming to an end at 4:44am the following morning and proceeds to show the last day Dafoe and Leigh have together in New York.Set almost entirely in a loft apartment, not much happens, there is little in the way of character development, relationships are tenuous at best and the reason for the world coming to an end? Well that is never fully explained. It is hinted that it is man's fault, but the exact details are non-existent, you'll sit there wondering how we could predict the end if it is our actions that have caused it. Is the ozone layer just going to suddenly disappear? The sea levels magically going to rise and wipe out all life overnight? The only logical explanation would be for a meteor impact, but that would be utterly out of our control. The main base for the story is shambolic and the apocalyptic nature of the film is not handled well. Family members final words to each other are short and hollow, the partying on the streets is half-hearted and the human interaction just has no depth or intimacy to it.Another film with a similar premise is Melancholia written and directed by Lars von Trier, this handles the end of the world in an entirely different manner and is both believable and enjoyable to watch, with excellent direction, cinematography and acting. As a low budget indie flick it aspires to be deep and meaningful but renders you numb, 4:44 lacks any redeeming qualities and it is such a shame as the subject matter would have perfectly fitted Dafoe's emotional acting style.AVOID!
... View MoreThis film is fairly disturbing. It is very well acted and absolutely true to life. Some reviewers question the portrayal of many people as going about their daily lives in the face of disaster. As someone who has experienced the possibility of death and spent time in a residence where people were dying, that is pretty much what most people do. Whether it is because denial is such a motivator or just because most folks don't have the funds to change their lives in a big way, most folks just keep on keeping on. You talk to loved ones, say goodbye, settle up unsettled business and put on the clothes you have been saving for a special occasion. My problems with this film are that the science is not explained and the story contains no concrete lessons. The moral seems to be 'I told you so.' It also is not moving. Therein lies its biggest failing. A quiet, thoughtful end of days film should leave the moviegoer with a desire to avoid the events of the movie. As a person with a history of activism, at the conclusion of this film I was discomfited, somewhat depressed but had no desire to do more about the environment. Why make a movie about an avoidable end of the world if not to move people? Why should you see it? Because it lays blame where blame belongs: on each and every one of us. The spacemen didn't do it. Terrorists didn't do it. Muslims, Koreans, Communists - none of them did it. We did it to ourselves and the Al Gore clip is not laughable but probably the scariest part of the film because it is real.
... View MoreDon't waste any time watching this movie. Is it possible to rate a movie with a negative number? Just saying! It's an "artsy fartsy film, minus the artsy. I would like to say this isn't the worst film ever, but I can't think of a movie I have ever watched that was worse. If you are going to watch this movie I would recommend the following steps. Step one, get a big bowl of popcorn. Two, get your favorite soda. Next get comfy in your favorite chair, then, start movie. Then walk over to TV, pick it up and throw it out your window. Then sit back down and enjoy your popcorn and pop. The film is slow, poor audio quality, and its biggest sin of all is it's boring.
