... View MorePretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
... View MoreI quite liked the premise of this film where the main character is under house arrest. The acting wasn't too bad, especially Famke Janssen. However, the film had way too many flaws for me to take it seriously and I am surprised by all the favourable reviews: The ghost was just terrible quality cgi and way too physical. It could do all sorts of things, had no subtlety and would surely have killed her long ago if that's what it wanted to do. She gave in and invited the grocery boy in for sex when she knew she was putting his life at serious risk. What person would do that?! The copper fluctuated too much in his attitude towards her..one minute hating her for killing his best friend, the next trying to exonerate her..and why would he be allowed to just camp outside her door all the time? And he would have heard the screams and been in there way before she had time to clean up so well and hide the boy's body. She realised she had to get rid of all the things connected with her husband, threw her wedding ring stupidly down the garbage disposal..putting her hand in when she knew her husband's ghost was around..and yet then still put the ring back on!!? And she stayed in the house stubbornly even though she was getting attacked all the time when if she had just run away, yes she may have gone back to prison but at least she'd have been safe?! She was in the raging fire in the cellar for ages at the end and would have died from smoke inhalation long before but wasn't even coughing!!? The bit when the ghost attacks the grocery boy was done quite well (though I still felt Marnie was at fault) but for me the whole film was let down by way too many plot holes and an angry, violent but not very ghostly or scary ghost.
... View MoreI didn't hate this movie. I didn't hate it neither, but at least it was kinda interesting to the end. The plot was really interesting and it ran more or less smoothly from the beginning to the end. There wasn't any scenes that felt unnecessary or forced, which is always a plus in any kind of movie. The acting was great; Cannavale is always professional, though he does seem to play the cop part A LOT. Janssen is another hardcore pro and Westwick was a refreshing add. The reason why I gave this 6/10, are the minuses: unclear motives, too convenient plot holes, cliché horror effects and the crappy ghost. I wish there was more "proof" of how awful the husband really was, maybe flashbacks of some sort. I kept thinking the movie ends in at a reveal that the wife is exposed as a horrible bitch that killed her husband for fun and I really didn't need that. Convenience of the cops showing up however they like and that the neighbors don't hear aaaall the commotion was a bit annoying. In the end it takes the fire brigade forever to show up and Janssen just walks away with the cat without any money without the neighbors realizing it's her, when they clearly know who the cop killer wife is.. Also, I wish the ghost had been a completely unseen, just a force, because this ghost just reminded me of Hollow man and it wasn't scary AT ALL. But, after all of this, the movie did a decent job. I find even some-what likable horror movies so rarely that this was a win for me.
... View MoreThe first minutes of this film don't reveal if it's gonna be a good movie or not. Reading the synopsis we get to think it's just another dumb scary movie, but as the movie goes we can see it is not. In most horror movies involving haunting and entities the characters don't leave the haunted house because they don't believe in what's happening-- that's very cliché. In this movie the main character BELIEVES, but can't leave the house because she is in house arrest. Sometimes we notice it's a scary version of the classic "Ghost", but it doesn't spoil the movie's quality. Special effects are plausible and well done-- considering it's budget, they are actually GREAT. Famke Janssen and Bobby Cannavale are two relatively unknown actors that surprised me with such good acting, I didn't think they'd be this good. Photography is beautiful and story is well written-- with exception of Poltergeist movements from the ghost--, making it hard to believe an independent movie would be so professional. All in all, this is a surprisingly good scary movie that afflicts the spectator, don't miss this picture!
... View MoreFirst of all the only good acting was done by Famke Janssen (Marnie Watson) otherwise the acting was horrid, (Shanks) played by Bobby Cannavale did poorly. The special effects looked like they were made off a high schooler's iPad. The Story had potential, it was a good sounding plot, fairly unique but the movie failed to deliver. The characters were not believable, and the writer did not do their research well. For one, I could never imagine a lady like Famke sleeping with a grocery delivery boy who she has 20 years on. The murdered cops partner would not be allowed to handle the case nor be in charge of an electronic monitoring system, And if I ever saw what I thought was a ghost, I would not care if I was on house arrest, I would be sitting on that front porch. The ending.... hmm, the whole ending sequence was bad, again, the CGI was bad, the part where Joey fell through the ceiling was good, but when Michael Pare (The Ghost) came out, it got stupid, Cannavale's character acted poorly as a hurt person, it was very dramatic and cheesy. The whole ring throwing scene was embarrassing. I don't know, I've been watching horror movies for 27 years, big fan of the genre, I read user reviews for this movie and decided to give it a chance. In fact this is my first review, I decided to write a review because I was shocked to see lots of people favoring this movie. Anyway I would give it a 1.5 stars, The plot was good, Famke was good, overall the movie sucked, I would like to put a restraining order on this film.
