It's a journey into history, a perfect portrait of that time, a masterpiece of blood, sweat, tears, mud and the most stupid and tragic american administration government in XX century.

The US should never have been in Vietnam and this excellent documentary makes that very clear. The lying and sheer evil of the US leadership - McNamara, Johnson, Nixon, Kissinger, selected military commanders and others...is appalling. Nixon and Johnson should have been impeached; Nixon tried for treason. The US leadership essentially murdered untold numbers of people for their own gain and misplaced national pride. This documentary largely tells the truth and those who discount the story are either too young to remember, have their own agendas or have succumbed to brainwashing by this nations increasingly militarized culture. It is ironic that the Netflix title page for this story sits right beside the title page for "The Roman Empire", because the US is an empire as was Rome, and will suffer a far worse fate than Romes'...and deservedly so, and this insane, senseless, useless war was as big step towards that end.

I have so many words, but I don't know how best to express them. This documentary is very hard to watch at times, but it is (in my opinion) something that everyone (who was not there) should watch. This series has taught me many things, not only about what it was like for my dear old friend and his comrades on the ground, but also the abysmal way in which the war was carried out and the poor decision making by the governments involved. Now 39 years of age, I grew up not knowing much about the Vietnam war. We (in Australia) were not taught anything about war other than the 1st and 2nd world wars. We celebrated ANZAC Day in memory of those who died in WW1. So to now have this superb documentary to further my research is truly appreciated and I thank all involved. This series is not some remake of a brutal war, it is the war. So be warned, this is not something I would recommend to someone suffering from depression, PTSD or any other mental illness likely to be triggered by the harsh reality of war. I have found myself in tears on many occasion whilst watching this, but for me, this is a journey I must take. I only wish that the Australian and New Zealand involvement had a mention. I give The Vietnam War series a solid and well deserved 10/10 stars.

THE VIETNAM WAR is another exemplary documentary series from producer Ken Burns; I would call it his best yet, but when he's done so many good ones - including the Roosevelts and WW2 - it's difficult to say that. Certainly this is a moving, engaging piece of filmmaking that had me in tears more than once. It's a lengthy, thorough chronological account of the war in Vietnam, from French colonial times through to the fall of Saigon and beyond, and it's told by the men who were there fighting in the front line, from the American, South Vietnamese, and North Vietnamese perspectives. Given that this was a modern war, there's a whole wealth of filmed footage to accompany the interviews and Peter Coyote's splendid narration; the end result can't be bettered and really does tell you everything you could ever need to know.
