It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.

The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

I did not have TV, so I rented movies, and found this TV mini-series at a used media outlet. I have watched it over 20 times over a 5 year period. I felt alone in my obsession until I checked online for other reviews. The music makes my heart feel glad, and the acting and special tone of the relationships and cadence of the speech pleases me no end. I read everything you can find on the Tempts. They were a favorite in college, lying on my dorm bed with earphones on -- however, the mini-series which honors the music, dancing, and stage appearances has earned, in my heart, top honors. If a famous actor had been in it, it would have won an Academy Award. And probably not been as good as it is. Congratulations to everyone involved.

I must admit - the Tempts were my favorite Motown group. I knew a lot about them. But not nearly as much as this film portrays. I quickly fell into the category of believing that these 5 (or 7 with Richard Street and Dennis Edwards) actors were the real thing. The emotion in this story can be best seen in the woman's eyes at the Eddie Kendricks solo show when he and guest David Ruffin serenade her with "You're My Everything." And Ruffin's audition on New Year's Eve when he first opens his mouth in "Shout" drew revere from the four Tepts who performed the encore.I could write for hours about this film. But if you have any interest in Motown or any music form the 60's or any era, this is absolutely a MUST SEE.And - II met Otis WIlliams recently and I asked him 2 questions: 1) Which voice was hardest to replace (answer - none) and 2) Which original Tempt does he miss the most (answer - Melvin "Blue" Franklin, of course)."And the band played on...." I stumbled upon this movie by accident. Never even heard about it. Saw it for the first time last year. My roommate had bought it from the local Walmart. I missed the beginning but saw enough to know I had to keep watching it. I was truly mesmerized by what I saw. I was not a Temptations fan growing up. I'm from the original MTV era. My musical interest are all over the place! Duran Duran, Journey, Pat Benatar, Def Leppard, that's the stuff I liked back then. Today it's country Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and some classic rock, but also The Spinners, and now The Temptations. Now I have my own place, and The Temptations movie was the first DVD I purchased. I just got in the mail The Temptations Emperors of Soul, and let me tell you it's a 5 disc, 105 songs total. I was blown away!! I recommend it to anyone who is a "Temp." fan. I'm not sure about the last 2 cd's in the set cause it's song from 1972 forward, it's after the Paul and David Ruffin era. But I will give it a listen. The actors they got to portray the singers did an excellent job of bringer the singers to film. I think Leon looks more David Ruffin, then the real David Ruffin. (lol) And I could look at Christian Payton forever!!! It's a shame there is not an original soundtrack featuring the actors singing the songs they preformed for the movie. This would be a cool cd to own along with the move.I do want to give a "shout out" about Dennis Edwards. He has a strong earthy voice, that just grabs you. He was also a contributor to the Temps, and the success of their music. Even though the movie focused on the 5 founding members, he stepped in when David stepped out.

In my opinion, this movie was so captivating, my soul soared every time they sang,my heart sunk every time when chapters in their lives were going pretty bad, i felt their joy and even their pain its just like i said its Captivating. I have a younger sister shes only 13 yrs, shes very much in to R&B and Hip hop but the reason why i mentioned this is because after watching this movie, she not only boasted about the movie to her friends but she also sings the songs while walking to school, i just thought that was nice to see and at least the lyrics she was singing was clean lyrics and not hardcore cursing with the hip hop she listens too lol. Just want to say is there anyway The Temptations would come to little ole New Zealand, you have such a Fan club :)
