The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

The Outer Limits was an incredible science fiction series. A lot of people compare it unfavorably to The Twilight Zone (and I mean the original Twilight Zone from the same era as this show, not the movie or remake series that are quite honestly very inferior to the original). But this show is in my opinion as good (or at least almost as good, so much so that it's practically equally) to Rod Serling's classic. Definitely check this show out, it's on DVD now. And the remake of The Outer Limits is also fantastic (not as good as the original but much better than say the remake of Twilight Zone). Check them both out if you like dark TV sci-fi.

"There is nothing wrong with your television set...". One of the most famous opening lines to one of the greatest sc-fi series of all times, "The Outer Limits"(1963-65 - 49 episodes). I've been re visiting this ground breaking, awesome anthology series. I have fond memories of watching this late at night, as a 12 year old...Under the covers of my bed and peering out...And having my mind blown by some of the head-y sci-fi concepts and story lines. In the pilot, "The Galaxy being", scientist Cliff Riobertson converses with an alien from the andromeda galaxy about such things as what death is and the concept of God! A great show, with great writers (Like Harlan Ellison), actors (Like Robert Culp. David McCallum, Bruce Dern, Martin Sheen and Cliff Robinson) and veteran sci-fi directors like Byron Haskin. The show was years ahead of it's time and featured some truly memorable creatures and aliens. The influence of the show also spread later on to shows like "Star Trek" and "The terminator"(based loosely on two famous episodes, "Soldier" and "Demon With A Glass Hand"). If you have never seen it, THIS is must see sci fi TV. Here are my 10 favorite episodes, which I also highly recommend, but you really can't go wrong watching any of them!1 - "The Sixth Finger" 2 - "Demon With A Glass Hand" 3 - "The Galaxy Being" 4 - "Soldier" 5 - "Nightmare" 6 - "The Zanti Misfits" 7 - "It Crawled Out Of The Woodwork" 8 - "A Feasibikity Study" 9 - "Archetects Of Fear" 10 - "Corpus Earthling"

TALES OF THE Mysterious, the Occult and Science Fiction have long been a staple of programing in the broadcast media. Radio's LIGHTS OUT and THE INNER SANCTUM were fine examples of radio shows in this genre* and the then current popularity and success of Rod Serling's THE TWILIGHT ZONE would surely spawn imitations and the certainly did.AS THE PRIME example of this phenomenon, we have today's 'victim', THE OUTER LIMITS.AS AN ANTHOLOGY series of slightly off beat and unlike others in that it was an hour show. Other series, such as THE TWILIGHT ZONE, ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS and Steven Spielberg's AMAZING STORIES gave us their best storytelling and mysterious turns in 30 minutes.** THE OUTER LIMITS was designed to be a 60 minute drama; hence what we had was essentially a collection of short feature films, albeit done for television.ALSO, THE PRODUCTION team of THE OUTER LIMITS strove to remind us of how much of a scientific age that we now lived in. This technological helplessness was introduced and emphasized by the cleverly executed opening sequence in which the off-screen announcer tells us of how "we will control the horizontal, the vertical, etc., etc.,..........OF ALL OF the episodes we recall, tow of our favourite installments were CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT with Barry Morse and I, ROBOT (Otto Binder's Adam Link) with Howard Da Silva.NOTE: * We do recall a short lived adaptation of INNER SANCTUM to the TV tube. It also was done as a series of "B" Movie shockers by Universal Pictures in the 1940's.NOTE ** Good examples of how the near perfect 30 minute anthology series may be ruined by expanding them to an hour are available in evidence in the doubling of running time spans for such series as THE TWILIGHT ZONE and ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS. The three key words here are: Padding, Padding and Padding!

If you first saw an episode of this program when it first aired, I can't believe you're not a BIG fan. If you've never seen this show before, however, I think you're likely to be VERY disappointed. Let's face it, the pacing is typically slow and awkward and the moral-of-the-story endings are preachy and increasingly tediously predictable. The acting is typically excellent, but the directing is terrible, and while the writing is centered on ingenious ideas, they're too often lost in clumsy, tension-less plotting. Sorry, but pacing and suspense are simply FAR better handled on the Outer Limits' rival, "The Twilight Zone."This show deserves its place as a milestone in TV programming, and as someone who first watched it when it aired, the number of episodes that fascinated or frightened me are too numerous to mention. But on a second, much later viewing, the flaws overwhelm the good stuff; while I can forgive the low-budget props and costumes, the storytelling falls far short of Rod Serling-level. And in all honesty, you have to admit that a moralizing voice-over at the end of the tale is not really the best method of thought-provoking!
