.Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

I have not seen any of the episodes of 'the Mysterious Cities of Gold', but i got a pretty good idea from reading the synopsis and the user reviews. from what i gather, it looks like a remake of a popular Japanese Cartoon serial that i used to love when i was a kid. in fact, i had seen the Arabic dubbing of the serial, and although i'm not a native Arabic speaker (I'm Indian) i still loved it very much. the day the serial ended I and my brothers were almost in tears. here's the Wikipedia link to the Cartoon that i'm talking about. I'm writing this here, because i don't see a link between the two Cartoon shows mentioned in any of the reviews.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Pepero

Today, I have just gotten a hold of all the episodes of Taiyô no ko Esteban from a friend. He has told me that he has seen this show when he was a child and he is glad that he has taped them. I watched two episodes so far and going to watch the third one. It is a very exciting and interesting show. Usually, I have no interest to watch shows or read books about the sea, the desert, and life in the 1500s but this is an exception. Also, it's anime so it will make this show a little better than the greatness it already is. Children from the 1980s who has watched this series most likely has thought of this show as inspirational to them. Other than Teenage Mutant turtles which was around during that time and other shows that wouldn't encourage children to do good. Also, I thought that the characters were well designed and the plot is well written. It is quite a shock when I heard from a review that Saban, the company that owned the American rights to it lost the episodes to a fire which will cause Nickelodeon to never air it again. Saban should get a hold of new episodes or get one from friends who have recorded it on VHS and convert them to whatever format they want to have Nickelodeon or another television channel air it again. The children of today need this show! It's just too good. As for others who were lucky enough to already seen it or others who got a hold of it just recently to remember the episodes so clearly, I have a message for you.Keep the spirit of the Mysterious Cities of Gold in your heart. Please.

I watched this when I was 6 or 7 or so, back in the 80s, then soon forgot about it for the next 17 years. I wish I'd remembered more, but then, I wasn't much of a couch potato and didn't catch every episode. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I somehow stumbled on the Wikipedia entry and the memories started coming back. I was a bit too young to be conscious of all the subtexts in the show, but if nothing else, it was what added words like Spaniard, Inca, Olmec, condor, Andes, and El Dorado to my vocabulary. Oh, and I thought Esteban, Zia and especially Tao had funny names. The things one thinks as a kid. I obtained the episodes and started watching. More memories - the voice-over in the intro, the theme, Esteban's medallion. As for the actual content of the show, it's brilliant stuff, and any thoughtful adult who isn't hung up about watching a "kids show" should watch it if the opportunity arises. I wish it would get re-run for the benefit of today's kids, and if that happens, parents, get your kids to watch it, and don't let them forget it!

This series was even translated into Swedish and ran on Swedish cable during the late 80's.Its about a Spanish orphan called Estoban, who meets a man who claim to be the one who saved him from his drowning fathers arms in a shipwreck on a voyage to the new world and the mysterious cities of gold. He also tells Estoban that his father had been to these cities, and that the medallion Estoban is the matching half of the one he is bearing himself (he split it when he saved Estoban who was only in infant at the time), and that it carries the secrets, perhaps even to the fate of his father. This is the reason for Estoban to go on a ship to the new world and meet new friends and race the Spanish authorities for the cities of gold, as well as he is trying to figure out the fate of his lost father.on his journey he teams up with a local Inca girl, and a boy who is the last of a lost hi-tech-civilization.At the end of each episode there was some piece of trivia to the old cultures of south America and/or the Spanish voyages related to the conquering of the Inca empire.*** spoiler***In my opinion it gets a little out of hand at the end of the series, when they introduce a culture called "the Omecks" an alien-like race that dwell in the ruins if lost Inca cities and kind of take some of their legacy, but they still play an important part of the story.
