This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.

Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.

The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

With every series people always compare but I see no comparison to anything with this show. I find the idea very unique and I blame the network for its cancellation because it was a good series. Their advertising of this series made it appear to be sort of a spoof, rather than a serious drama. This is why I didn't pay much attention to it and didn't watch even one episode when it was actually on TV. If they had represented it better I would have watched it regularly. It wouldn't have helped because Nielson only counts ages 18-49 viewers in their ratings and not that many really. I have just watched the only season and was shocked they canceled it. It was a great show if you like fantasy/horror. I will put this bluntly, even in the book Dracula, he could go out in daylight. The idea he couldn't was drummed up by screenwriters in Hollywood and became sort of a stereotype. Besides they are fictional and can be any way the author chooses. In some folklore , the werewolf and the vampire are connected and Bram Stoker mixed the two and that is why some think vampires are this or that. I never liked the idea of undead because how can they be that and eat anything or think, and walk and talk? It has to be more of an affliction passed from one to the other. This seems to be the case in this show as in many books even if it isn't spelled out.I think the next season would have been even better. It is too bad this show was canceled because it had a good cast of stars. It has been highly underrated by some. This is why I generally don't watch network shows because they are too quick to cancel them. A show should have at least two seasons. The first one is the development of the story line and the second gets to the meat of things and moves on from there. What a shame such a good series was canceled. I would at least try watching the first season anyway if you haven't seen it. It's filled with vampires, werewolves, succubi, magick and a host of others that hadn't yet been revealed. It ended on a cliff hanger unfortunately which is very unethical of networks to do.

When i viewed the 13 episodes of the first season, in a span of two days, i had no idea there wouldn't be a second season. I'm totally baffled over this decision by the ABC executives. As a fan of the occult and vampires some of the basic elements for good entertainment were there, but The Gates were so much more than another show about bloodsuckers, for the same reasons HBO:s Walking Dead is more than a zombie series. This quality production had a great storytelling and a marvelous cast that blended harmoniously together. Some classical themes from vampire movies were used but many ideas were also fresh and incorporated in the template for a good drama series. Without giving away any plot-info i simply state the obvious fact that the co-existence of vampires, werewolves, witches and humans in a gated community with all of the problems this could and of course would impose, would it be real, was nothing less than a stroke of geniality from the creators Richard Hatem and Grant Scharbo. The development of the plot is skilfully crafted and as some questions are answered during the final episodes new ones are raised and with the final scene in episode thirteen still in front of my eyes it's more than a bizarre feeling that this episode was also the last one.To single out one actor wouldn't be fair, but with that said, no fan of this series probably won't deny that Frank Grillo was phenomenal as head of police Nick Monahan or that Rhona Mitras cold elegance served as a perfect contrast to Claires blood cravings. I simply can't understand why this suspenseful show didn't appeal to an American audience. Maybe the world wasn't ready for another show about vampires, after True Blood aired in 2008, but compared to The Gates that show, though humorous, lacks suspense. It's my firm belief that had the show aired in Europe, or Sweden for that matter, the success had been total. A Shame, and i hope ABC changes their twisted minds because I want more of this.

There have been quite a few vampires & werewolves on TV recently. Vampire Diaries and Teen Wolf have found an audience but The Gates was cancelled. The storyline tried to be both about the adults and the teens. That was it's niche but also why it failed because the adult storyline wasn't interesting. There were some flaws in writing and casting. Somehow it had a daytime soap feel about it. They had too many short scenes without much happening. And not a lot of plot progressed each episode so one could lose interest quickly. There wasn't enough humor too. Casting was not prime time. Rhona Mitra looks quite vampire like but she isn't too pleasant looking to tune into every week. Luke Mably's Brit accent was a bit grating. Frank Grillo had silly lines. I liked Marisol Nichols. Skyler Samuels isn't attractive enough to be the main teen girl in the show. Her next show 9 Lives of Chloe King was cancelled too. Plus the character she played was annoying. Didn't feel their romance. Her boyfriend played by Travis Caldwell looked a bit insipid to be the main teen lead. Colton Haynes has gone on to a similar role in Teen Wolf. Was kind of getting into the series towards the end but I can see why it was cancelled. With True Blood for the older crowd and Teen Wolf and Vampire Diaries for the younger crowd The Gates just didn't have a place.

I have read some of the other reviews about this show and felt compelled to give my opinion...I am enjoying watching it. It may not be completely original with its format as some other people have pointed out, but then so what? with the amount of shows out there these days I imagine it is extremely difficult to come up with a completely unique and original concept.Yes I agree Twilight has re-sparked the public interest in vampires but for me it was always Buffy and Angel that really paved the way for all the other vampire shows we have today. Also something to keep in mind is although The Gates does contain vampires it's not solely based on vampires.I'm a little confused as to why some people are taking issue with the fact that the vampires can go out in sunlight? The explanation of them using sun cream is quite logical/believable and I find this much more acceptable than them being all sparkly like in Twilight lolThe Gates was a little slow to start with but has improved with every episode, I'm loving the tension and snide comments between the vampires and the were-people.I am also liking Devon, it's interesting to see what evil plot she is trying to implement. And as another reviewer mentioned I'd also like to know what's in the box!I think that you need to watch this show with an open mind and not be too quick to compare it to other shows in its genre and just enjoy it for what it is. It is worth a watch.
