Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

I watched this as I read on a website recommending it if you like Game of Thrones or Vikings. Ok, it's not as good as those two shows, but it isn't bad at all, I found it hugely entertaining. The action starts quite quickly and it has a good easy to follow plot that has some very well scripted parts, which are all acted well. Lee Jones is particularly good in his role as the warrior knight and Welsh rebel who assumes the identity of the bastard executioner, leaving him no choice but to commit some grotesque acts of torture in order not to blow his cover. I've no idea how historically accurate this film is, there are real characters from history in the form of Edward II, who was historically recorded as an incompetent king of England and his soulmate Piers Gaveston, 1st Earl of Cornwall, who it is rumoured were lovers, although this is disputed by some historians. At the end of the day I don't care how historically accurate it is, both The Tudors and Vikings contain gross historical inaccuracies, but they are still highly entertaining shows. There are a few scenes in it where you might look away and wince for a bit, after all, Welsh/ English medieval torture was quite gruesome, so if you liked Vikings and Dexter, there's a good chance you'll like this.It might not have you on the end of you seat throughout the entire show, but you'll be pretty close to it. An interesting twist with the Templar and the bloodline of Christ is introduced towards the end of the series. There's also some good battle scenes, the best being in the final epidote. Only one strange thing the producers didn't choose to use and that was Welsh actors or at least people who could do a Welsh accent, with only one character having a mild Welsh accent. Maybe they thought Americans wouldn't understand it. If it were me, I'd have filmed it in the Welsh language and Norman French with subtitles, ok it definitely wouldn't have been recommissioned for a second series if they did that, but it wasn't anyway, which is a great shame. Still worth watching if you like a good bit of medival action with a good storyline.

Was so much looking forward to watching this executioner to find it very disappointing. The opening seen had a lot to be desired Acting not that great, Fighting seen rubbish and as for the story line needs more not quit sure what to think. There is no big name actors. Effects poor. I have only watched the first episode hopefully it will improve.I was hoping it would have been good as the Vikings, Outlander and Spartacus. Not big names however they had you gripped for the very first episode. If the episodes don't improve i don't think i would look forward to a second season. So let hope it can be all addressed so we can enjoy a very much Executioner

I loved this show, it was just getting really good when they decided to kill it off. What is wrong with the people that take shows off or put on more crummy ones.Lady Love was in love again and would be pregnant saving her lands and people. A true Romeo and Juliet type story line. I was in love with the whole show. Please put the show back on for hopeless romantics like me. I know the show was a little on the bloody side, but so it the show Bones and several other stupid cop shows that I could care less about. This show had good characters, excellent actors and a very good drama.

This is my 1st review, but I felt that I needed to let y'all know that The Bastard Executioner is absolutely WORTH getting lost in Sutter's new World. It took me, maybe, 1 to 2 episodes before I understood what exact story was trying to be told; and it is absolutely incredible. GIVE IT A CHANCE!! If you still disagree past episode 3, I'll give you a pass. Don't over think the language and get lost in all the accents, they become fluid and even beautiful as you go on. You fond yourself carrying for the unlikely hero and if you are a fan of the medieval, knights, Kings and the everyday goings on of this World, this show IS for you. Trust me... GIVE IT A CHANCE!!
