Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

If watched in the afternoon or early evening this is a fun hour of entertaining TV.But here is a little secret, if you have trouble sleeping, try watching this late at night in bed. It is miraculous, it sends both myself and my wife to sleep, 100% guaranteed. It isn't because it is a bad show, or boring, or not entertaining, but something about the pace of this show when watched in bed is guaranteed to put you to sleep. It is an adult lullaby! We have watched this entire series 3 times now, neither of us have seen all episodes yet, we keep going to sleep during them! If we have trouble sleeping, we put it on, 10-15 minutes later we are fast asleep.I usually rate shows based upon quality, and there is nothing wrong with the quality of this show, on pure quality it gets 7/10. But as a sleep aid it is exceptional, better than any available drug and without any side affects. This is a show you should store on a DVR and to be used for both entertainment and as a sleep aid.

Like the flower in "The Italian Rapscallion" episode, a good, nonviolent, lovely, mystery series blooms once after 25 years and then dies.I feel that "Rosemary and Thyme" is such a rare gift to television, a morass of cheap "reality" shows that dispense with the nuisance of paying those pesky writers, and insult Americans' intelligence.Speaking as an American, I only watch British television, and Love the old sitcoms. These productions are smooth, clever, and not blood spattered. They actually have (wait for it...PLOTS), and excellent writing as well as characters who are surgically unenhanced and, believe it or not, older than 30! "Rosemary and Thyme" isn't perfect; but it sure beats whatever is in second place!

I enjoy R&T thoroughly, but will admit freely that it requires a certain suspension of disbelief. Rosemary and Laura—especially Rosemary—are incorrigible snoopy-noses; they are always poking into matters which are really none of their business. They often—again, mostly Rosemary—alter crime scenes and steal evidence, and in almost every episode keep something from the authorities which should have been shared. One thing any viewer will figure out after seeing just a few episodes: do NOT hire these women to work on your property if you don't want death and destruction to descend upon you. The characters are intelligent and capable, but the Grim Reaper follows them through the world. By the way, I cannot imagine any two actresses doing a better job with these characters than Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris. Each is an excellent performer, and they work together wonderfully. My wife and I own the whole series on DVD, and I wish they'd included outtakes, because I suspect that there was considerable laughter on the sets. If you're a fan of true crime TV shows, or gritty, realistic dramas, you may not like Rosemary and Thyme...or you may find that the music, flowers, and glorious filming locations are just the thing to give you a rest from reality. I recommend the show.

I have only seen the first season, and will probably watch more, as my wife and I enjoy British mysteries a lot.The stories are short (compared to the movie length episodes of Midsomer Murders, Inspector Lynley, or Morse) and the leads have no direct criminal investigative link, so they have to "run into" the crimes. Both of these issues give the show a "Murder, She Wrote" feel. The linkage of the characters to the crimes seems forced, and with a short program, often the clues are slammed into your face, as if there was a red light on your TV set to tell you that "this was a clue!" The leads are both very well done, charismatic and interesting. The episodic characters have, so far, been well thought out and have solid and distinct personalities, not always easy to so in a shorter show.In the end, it is a lightweight series, but fun. It will not be my first choice for cozy mysteries for my wife and I to watch, but it is decent filler between while we take a break from other series.
