... View MoreThis is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
... View MoreEach character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
... View MoreThe tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
... View MoreAbsolutely horrifying in its bare-faced exploitation of graphic sex, violence, language, titillation, voyeurism, etc. All wrapped up in a technically elegant and highly professional cinematigraphic, set-design etc. package. One asks, for example, why bother with Roman history if this is the objective - certainly most of the viewers and fans will not be interested in the fine details of Roman history. Answer - 'History' gives a semblance of 'legitimacy' to what was once the 'top-shelf' in convenience stores. Now viewers can indulge can watch without hiding! One asks, why so much male nudity in relation to female nudity? There is little homoerotic content or interest in the film, and some suggestion of good old homophobia. Why then? Answer: The film is fundamentally sexist. Male nudity attracts female viewing (double the revenue) and provides the thin veneer of 'correctness' (this is a film, supposedly for liberated female viewers too - allowing the to accept otherwise appalling male sexism thourghout the film). This Series is a horrifying social document that shows us the worst that big-budget corporate 'entertainment' can offer. This series is as ugly, as exploitative, as filthy in its values as possible. Technically very well made, of course - vis the many prizes for costume, set design, hairdressing etc. Visual effects are yet another draw-in for commercial audiences.
... View MoreI have always liked ancient Roman history, from when learning Latin as a wee lad.Historical fiction varies greatly in quality, often depending on the research, writing and target audience. Accuracy is up to debate, but doesn't lessen enjoyment unless glaringly obvious.Who can say with certainty, exactly what went on two thousand years ago? The main attested historical events are adhered to in this magnificent production. The devil is in the details as they say.In Masters of Rome (a fictional literary account of the late republic) the author has stated that she would take a small fact (learnt by extensive research) and expound upon it. This is what the creators and writers of this show have done over and over, to great effect, but without veering from historical events. For example: history states that Pompey Magnus was murdered by the Egyptians to the horror of Caesar. The show weaves a story, that no-one can any longer contradict!I love the acting: particularly Polly Walker, Indira Varma and James Purefoy.I am amazed by the production values; it's not surprising the beeb in particular couldn't afford more episodes. A shame though, as I have seen this show again on Netflix and can recite quotes as I can with I Claudius(a beeb mini-series, based on the book by Robert Graves). There are so few shows of this era, which is a pity, but understandable, considering the work involved to do the period justice. Netflix have condensed the show(a bit) for some reason and missed out some good phrases and character moments.I would heartily recommend this to any adult.
... View MoreI absolutely love Game of Thrones, Dr Who, Sherlock, The Wire, Its Always Sunny, Lost, Spartacus, and literally every television series I can get ahold of. With out a doubt these twenty two hours are the best television series of all time. At least till 2015 when i wrote this.Naturally one must be skeptical of such a short reviewWell let me tell you. It does not matter whether you are an expert on ancient romes history or, if you know absolutely nothing. Rome is an amazing drama.A show we unfortunately only have twenty two hours of to watch. I can promise if you like "A Game of Thrones" I can guarantee Rome will drop that salivating jaw of yours.
... View MoreI have been interested in Greek and Roman history since I went to school. I was looking forward to a serious production. I had no preconceptions and did not know which era of the long history of Rome would be addressed. This had the potential to be an amazing series given all the plotting and political intrigue that went on in ancient Rome over many centuries. Instead it is reduced to the level of a soap opera. This series is just plain awful. Where to start - poor acting, poor dialog, sex every few minutes, nudity, jerky plot, no introduction as to who the protagonists are and their back story? This along with Spartacus is not wholesome family entertainment.I gave up on this dross after one episode.
