Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.

The premise is that society built a machine that can measure human aggression and can predict criminal activity before it happens. Basically similar to Minority Report. Also, humanity has become so dependent on the technology that they have become stunted and oblivious to common sense similar to Demolition Man.The problem is the perspective. The show simply takes itself too seriously pretending to be deep and mysterious. It isn't, almost everything is obvious and you knew from the very 1st episode how this would end. The premises are absurd and unrealistic and the plot holes are so numerous that you cant even count them, and yet, the writers continuously try to explain themselves to make it logical which actually makes things worse. Demolition Man was excellent because it knew it was absurd and made fun of the fact through comedy. There is no comedy in this show... it literally believes its own hype.Minority Report was a bit better than this show because it did not drag on for so long. The story here is actually very shallow yet they try to delve into psychology and technology to make it more believable. As stated above, this strategy did not work. It actually worked against the show and made it less believable and characters less interesting. This is no Law and Order nor CSI.Give it a shot if you like. I would say that normal folks might find it interesting but if you are of tech background or have an above average intelligence, this one will bore you to death. I had to fast forward the last 4 episodes in season 1.

If the premise of this series seems vaguely familiar to you, you have probably read or seen The Minority Report by Phillip K Dick. Having said that, this series takes the original concepts and runs to places with them that even PKD didn't go. Extremely well-thought out ideas abound about the future of the web, everyday hologram use, future criminal behavior, intelligent weapons and the ultimate uses of wearable tech are both ever-present and scattered everywhere in this series like easter eggs, and if you are interested in the direction our interactions with politics, technology, surveillance and the internet are going, this is required viewing. The characters do stick, by and large, to traditional Japanese animation conventions, but I found that in this particular series they were more in line with Western expectations for a crime drama and were fascinating and believable once you adjust to the usual subtitle issues. This anime could be remade tomorrow as a western TV show or film and I believe it would do well (even after we censored the crap out of it); this is very accessible, emotional, and beautiful film making. The problems they face are solved in believable ways and that alone is extraordinary for an anime series. The violence is very adult and I would not let a child or even a weak stomached adult watch this. It's simply far too bloody and the situations are both adult and emotionally difficult. Throw in the serious questions this series poses about human behavior, the government's place in shaping it and government oversight, and it's a tough brew to process all at once.Much of what this series has to say are things we really need to be thinking about right now: The effect of violence on both victims and the police who choose to protect them, the undue focus and prejudice of the police, press and society on minorities and the poor, and the ability of corporations and the wealthy to ignore or shield themselves from the law and the massive injustices that this ultimately causes are all issues touched on by this VERY adult series. As far as anime goes, this is a 10. As entertainment in general it is an easy 9.

This anime is brilliant! Psycho-Pass is a very smart series that deeply analizes freewill and whether or not a person's "hue", when cloudy, can determine if they will become a threat to society. Using a special weapon known as "The Dominator", detectives are able to continuously read and send psychological data to determine a persons crime coefficient. Depending on how clouded a persons "hue" is, they will either receive mandatory rehabilitation, or an execution on the spot.At first I was not going to give this anime a chance, but I am thrilled I did! I love the dark, mysterious, and serious atmosphere of this anime. Additionally, the logical questions postulated regarding aspects of freewill and whether or not a person can be judged before they commit a crime were magnificent! Furthermore, every character added a significant element that made them both likable and unforgettable. Finally, the animation was beautiful, and the music significantly heightened every situation. In many ways I would say this series is already comparable to a series like "Cowboy Bebop".In short, Psycho-Pass is a juicy sophisticated anime that will appeal to many mystery/sci-fi fans. It is animated craftsmanship and definitely worth the watch.

The story this anime takes on is a very common one, future utopian or dystopian society, morally ambiguous cops. These concepts have been done to death, yet Gen Urobuchi does a good job of making the story feel fresh. Rather then following the usual "big brother" government that is straight up evil, the message is balanced that shows a need for "the system," yet also points out the flaws. The characters are hit or miss. For the most part the characters are good, and feel real...then there are characters that feel too much like a trope or flat out boring, and to the the show's credit, those characters for the most part are not over played...for the most part. My favorite aspect of the characters though is that the characters grow. You definitely can tell that the characters are different in the end. The execution of everything was great in the beginning. Exposition is kept to the essentials treating you, the viewer, as an intelligent being capable of figuring things out on your own. That being said, towards the end, the show falls victim of wrap everything up with exposition, and it slows the third act down horribly. All in all, Psycho-Pass is a good show, it has enjoyable characters, and an engaging story up until the end, which was a real shame cause I did really enjoy watching it.
