I borrowed the set of DVDs from the library and I had high expectations for it given the superb cast. My wife and I watched the first 30 minutes and all though it kept saying, "this just isn't working". I had the oddest feeling that the soundtrack throughout was dubbed ... which was odd as you could see the actors speaking in English and hear them talking in English but it just didn't always seem to line up properly; not out of sync, but actually dubbed. The quality of the recording sounded as if it was added later by the actors in a studio reading their lines over the video rather than recording what they had actually said at the time. Background noises weren't always right either which just added to this impression. I could understand this with French actors who who were speaking French and needed to be dubbed into English, but did they also do this was the actors speaking English? Or was it a case of the actors so unbelieving in the poor dialogue that they delivered their lines in such wooden and unconvincing voices? The script was certainly uninspiring so I wouldn't blame them if this was the case.I don't know but the whole think was weird and made it all unwatchable. We gave up after around a half an hour and watched something else I had recorded instead.

This excellent Napoléon (2002) showed once again that to make a high level movie, we need for the following things: a very good script, a very good director, very good actors, a very good soundtrack, a very good image and generally, a very good crew. And this movie has it all. Only words of praise for Napoleon (2002) that France had to make it for the world cinematography. Some remarks: Christian Clavier has created an unchangeable Napoleon character. Napoléon (2002) was made with love, honesty, respect and put things in place that it deserves. A film that I highly recommend to be viewed and reviewed. Congratulations for the entire crew. Note: I highly recommend this film to American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences's members, to watch it and maybe they'll understand how looks an excellent movie.

This serial is about Napoleon Bonaparte, emperor of the French people after The French Revolution takes place. The only thing really lacking in this film is the war scenes. They simply don't use enough soldiers to give a realistic effect of a battle. The rest of the serial is very good. The acting is good and what I especially liked is how they show closeups of the characters at certain times. The music is good and theatrical sounding. The costumes worn by the characters are expensive and beautiful (much like French design is in real life) and the architecture of the houses was splendidly recreated in great details.I bought this series from A&E and definitely recommend watching it if you're a guy who's interested in historical serials. Napoleon is one of the most fascinating of them all, so who better to watch one about?

What a shocking disappointment. I bought the Napoleon 2 DVDs edition, as a gift to myself for Christmas and, what a waste of money . and time waiting for it. The product is so bad in contents as in features; it even lacks the actual almost standard Close Captioning.I have read some biography and historical books about Bonaparte and his time, and I can't stand for Depardieu casting Fouche, I think it could be better as a Marshal, Ney, Lannes of somebody like them.Napoleon casting actor is anything but `imperial', for the man who forged by himself the greatest empire in human history. Where are the famous Marshals? Across hours and hours of soap opera, all we see is two or three puppets in uniform. The top of ridiculous is the mid-eastern bodyguard Napoleon got from his Egypt campaign, remarkable. You get tired of see Napoleon, alone, reading papers or playing with maps and lead soldiers, lost in the immensity of the palaces, and the overacting (as many of his plays) Malkovich spying through doors. Napoleon spent his years as France head of state, when in office, surrounded by tens and hundreds of clerks, messengers, ministers (not only Police - Fouche and Foreign Affairs - Talleyrand), aides du camp, and . in first place, his `Joint of Chiefs', leaded by the superb Marshal Berthier. At last, but not least in the insanity, the time (and the weight on the drama) gift to Josephine de Beauharnais. She was an important lady of French high society, but the emperor's romance with her was short in time - against the almost 20 years he commanded France destiny - and, more important, probably was calculated from his part, because the important connections and relations she had in society, but he, as a young officer of provinces, lacked. Is true, he was fair with her son, Eugene de Beauharnais, named him general, prince of the empire and Viceroy of Italy. Eugene was fighting for his stepfather from 1796 to 1814. But, he earned all these awards because his own merits as a fine officer and not because his mother influenced over the emperor.
