Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.

... View MoreThe movie really just wants to entertain people.
... View MoreExactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
... View MoreSince when do a bunch of 19th century teenaged soldiers have the verbal skills of Sir John Gielgud? I am so tired of Civil War era pieces that make everyone so erudite. These were ignorant farm kids! Secondly, the premise of this ridiculous southern belle hanging out in a makeshift hospital was just annoying. I really hated this show.
... View MoreSomeone- perhaps Samuel Johnson?- said "Second marriages are the triumph of hope over experience." I gave this new series a few tries. Apparently, there is a new school of screenwriter thought which dictates "The more subplots per character, the better." I shall refer to this as the GRRM school of writing. This show seems to be firmly in that camp. As a "ferinstance", there is a main plot about dealing with the casualties of war in a hospital in the midst of a bloody conflict with primitive medicine. Then there are subplots involving conflicts between old and new schools of thought, confronting racial prejudice, split political allegiance, family conflicts, and the breakup of a marriage. The proceeding only involves one character. The actual medical research seems decently done, although the historical accuracy gets short shrift. The Emancipation Proclamation was not even signed, let alone law, when the series is initially set and would not be law for several months. This series cannot seem to make up its mind if it is Deadwood, MASH,or Gone With The Wind with a dash of Uncle Tom's Cabin thrown in.
... View Moreevery word spoken makes me cringe. the acting is at the high school level. the characters are caricatures. patients not fed? seriously? The head of the kitchens a subhuman worm. some of the doctors barely trained as evidenced by being unable to perform procedures that were in common practice in the middle ages. this a masterpiece classic? they say the patients are to be bathed. with blood red dirty water? has any attempt been made to research the era? this was the age of the dawn of modern medicine. they used chloroform. they used traction devices. but didn't feed their patients? have you seen Ripper Street? this could have been a masterpiece instead of a farce.
... View MoreOnce and done for this Tar Heel. More stereotyped Southerners getting their noses rubbed in slavery of which only a very small percentage of the population owned. There are the stereotypical dumb Southern belles, loopy old fathers, carpetbaggers, Yankees telling Southerners how to do things, and so on. Hmmm...sounds like a former neighbor of mine from Massachusetts who prided himself on having all the answers and being the first one out the driveway during the occasional snow storm. I don't know what "experts" were brought in to do the Civil War such a disservice. I would imagine that no Southerners had any input into the script. The only thing Southern about Mercy Street is its Richmond location.
