I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
... View MoreThe plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
... View MoreWhile it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

... View MoreHere in Greece in the past years we had a influx of turkeys series in our television program. My issue is not that these series are from a country with which we as a nations do not have the best backstory , personally if the series were good then ,whatever. But they are not, like with here, where the Greek producers just copy the elements that are popular and not make something good and this show is no exception. As a History Buff,I feel excited when I here that a movie or series will be based on a historical period or event and if this event is not well known ,bonus respect to the creators to have the balls to invest in to it. Although if the product does not try to be faithful to its source material ,then I get major phished off and I what to crucified them Bolton style. And here is the case ,one of the most interesting person in history and with some of the most heart felt story lines, they threw from the widow and gave as the water down version of Game of Thrones!! The funny thing is the GoT although is in a fantasy world, is more realistic than a show, which is based of actual events and characters. Come on people!!Any way apart from the fact is boring as hell , this show was intentionally changed in order to be more in line with our own modern view. I mean mean are you mental me? For the producers, guys go have as a based a ruler which is called in the west the Magnificent and to the East the Lawgiver, if you staid faithful then:1) You honor your own history2) Make the general public willing to invest to the study of a man who was one of the most important in the Old World and his period the...wait for it.. Protestand Reformation!!!In short do not see these series. If you want to see a historical period come to life go watch HBO Rome.
... View MoreThe story itself is intriguing, if you don't mind watching grown-up idle women doing nothing but cat fighting, harming and killing each other. This is the good part. Bad part is that history has been falsified completely. As a born Hungarian, I am offended by the fact that the Turks - who have attacked, conquered and enslaved my people as well as other Europeans, are being portrayed as nice people who were having some nice "campaigns", making it sound like an innocent pastime. Our king is being portrayed as a complete fool. Turks weren't like this. They were a cruel, merciless horde that kept Europe in fear and were hated by everybody. I find it interesting that, in the movie, the very people who have been taken from their families by the them, stayed loyal to them and in some cases, turned against their own. This is like watching a musical comedy version of the holocaust. Nice work Turkish people. Problem is, you are not fooling anybody. Not in Europe.
... View MoreI only recently happened upon this gem of a series from Turkey and am completely hooked. I was immediately enthralled with the fact that most of the story takes place in Istanbul(Constantinople from the 1520s-1560s), which also happens to be during the same time as King Henry VIII's reign in England and Martin Luther's opposition to the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. I was a huge fan of The Tudors and found that series quite enjoyable as well. I cannot help but compare how both rulers, Henry VIII and Suleiman, had women/wife problems, but that they dealt with their problems in very different ways. The Magnificent Century presents a Turkish view of the Ottoman Empire and Islam expansion during the Osman Dynasty's rule that encompassed much of the known world including eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia and parts of Africa. TMC helps to explain the various locales where Islam came to be and how it came to be in so many varied locations where it still exists to this very day. (I loved my visit to Istanbul and Turkey, which is one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities in Europe, and right up there with Budapest, in my own opinion. Istanbul is rich with history and culture, both current and from centuries ago, as is Budapest. The Magnificent Century immediately captivated me through its beautiful and varied costumes and customs of that period, set decorations, locales, characters, excellent actors, drama, humour, historical events, court intrigues, harem intrigues and politics in general. Watching it from a Magyar (Hungarian) perspective, there were times I forgot I was watching a Turkish series which had been dubbed into Hungarian, as their histories often met and collided during Suleiman's reign. I tried, without much success, to track down an English subtitled version of this series but quickly discovered that it is not available; however, there are a limited number of English-subtitled episodes available on Youtube at this time. It is not completely available in any English-speaking country at this time, which I think is a huge pity as I think it is a series that should be made available to the English-speaking world as I am sure that it will find an audience, just as other series such as The Tudors and Rome had before this series. It does have a huge following in a very large part of the other countries in the world, especially in Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Fortunately, I was able to track down this television series through the Hungarian dubbed version currently being televised in Hungary, now in Season 3. While I realize that there are probably historical inaccuracies for the sake of a smooth flowing television series narrative, there are many good historical aspects which may resemble some grain of the truth to the history of Suleiman's reign. It can appear as a soap opera at times, but that does not diminish the fact that I believe the show is done tastefully and respectfully and despite dealing with the subject of a harem, there is no nudity, foul language and onerous bloodshed, unless dealing with a conquest or battle scene. I would safely say that even a young person could watch this without fear of foul language or nudity. The most nudity one will experience is seeing a woman's cleavage, unlike The Tudors which was quite explicit, though I enjoyed that series very much. It's interesting to watch another world view where bedroom scenes are left to one's imagination. There are several love stories simultaneously weaved throughout the series, along with the political aspects and it keeps you coming back for the next episode to find out what happens next. I am looking forward to the beginning of Season 3 and 4, as they become available. If one enjoys historical drama with interesting subplots and twists I highly recommend The Magnificent Century.
