It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

.Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

I remember watching this series in France when I was a kid. I doubt it was broadcasted in the US though. I saw it a couple of times and I loved it. It's full of adventures humour and pursuits. Great for the whole family. Wish I could find it on tape or DVD.
