At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
... View MoreThrough painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
... View MoreWhile it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
... View MoreOne of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
... View MoreThis show is new to me, but I'm already captivated by the cast, storyline and costumes. It is a breathe of fresh air!
... View MoreI'm not going to add anything new other than to say if you like period shows, especially about British history during the 1700 and 1800's, you will appreciate the set designs, the customs and the scenery. The one thing you probably won't enjoy, the only thing you might not like, is the funky soundtrack. The one reviewer hit this nail on the head. What was the prod/dir's thinking of? The music (so called) is terrible. It doesn't fit at all. Imagine the period drama, "Cold Mountain" with rap music! Ick! Icky! Disgusting to say the least.
... View MoreAmazing, the story, the casting, the writing, aesthetics were stunning. Acting direction, set decoration, cinematography, editing were breathtaking. The costumes are above Oscar caliber. Sheer perfection from every department.I sat down around 10 am on a Sunday morning to check out one episode, sounded interesting. I sat riveted to the screen for all eight episodes. Just could not stop. The story is full of interesting and dynamic characters, the multiple, interwoven plot lines are full of deliciously Machiavellian deception and intrigue. This is real adult, intelligent fare. If you read a review that is less than an eight, the author is a moron. Fabulous film, worth an eight-hour session.Best film I have seen since I can remember, and I found it by accident on a streaming site. Must see!
... View MoreThis show deserves so much praise. It's brilliant. I initially thought it would be a cheap and bawdy show capitalizing on sexuality with weak storytelling. How wrong I was ! Each episode is tight with suspense and intrigue, and I was hooked almost immediately. Despite the subject matter, (two competing brothels), the sex scenes were not even slightly gratuitous. It was all very classy ! The Baroque period London and Rococco fashion is spot on and a real treat for viewers. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into production value, it's very visual and there's a lot of attention to detail. There is a lot of juxtaposition between the high class aristocracy and lower classes which really makes for great viewing. I can't fault the acting and the quality of dialogue is top notch - suitable for the setting; but without pretentiousness. My friend who recommended this show told me: "Do yourself a favor and watch this show!". I echo those sentiments and can't wait for season two.
