... View MoreLet me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

... View MoreI don't get this show at all. it started out as a kind of comedic buddy flick with Hap and Leonard doing the things they do down in the swamp lands of East Texas. And for that it was great. But that constituted about ten minutes of the first episode before everything went straight to hell. It was no longer a comedy at all, but rather an existential nightmare reminiscent of Dante's Inferno, but without all the pyrotechnics. Nothing could possibly redeem this wreck of a show but the acting, which did not include the obligatory homicidal psychopath, Jimmy Simpson and his apparently bionic, blood-thirsty and equally psychopathic Pollyanna whomever. If you like misery and violence counterbalanced with 10 minutes of humor in the first episode, have at it.
... View MoreThis is set well in my lifetime: in 1988 when Trudy was cremated I was 21. I had actually already encountered a "cell" phone by 1988 (a local black drug dealer with a kind heart who used to give my white self a ride home from work at 2 am and never once hit on me or asked for anything in return for those rides). I find the racism portrayed painful, yet on point. I find the whole series sad, but engaging. I look forward to the remainder of Season 2 and the following Season 3.
... View MoreReviews are ultimately people's opinions. However, there are some criteria that are usually standard for judging the quality of a work. If that were not difficult enough, one can always raise the issue of 'what makes YOU qualified to address the presence or absence of these criteria?" Briefly, I've been an actor, have written and published fiction, have studied the nature of narrative, characterization, story, plausibility, and overall aesthetic design. Hap & Leonard fall short in most of these categories. The episodes often have no suspense. Nothing to keep a unity of narrative together. The dialogue is at times trivial, sounding like an unscripted conversation--but boring ones. That is not how stories work. Stories distill life; they don't record it. Once the relationship between Hap & Leonard is established, there is nothing to develop. The conversations between and among the pair and when talking with others is not dramatic. There is some discussion about anti-war movements, protests, serving/not serving in the military. However, these are not dramatic. They are dull and nebulous. None of the characters appear committed to their credos. Then there is the issue of plausibility. I read a good description of storytelling. It is the job of the writer to make the improbable plausible, and the plausible inevitable. To do so requires a talent for dramatic action and good characterization. Nothing in the first season made me feel as though anyone had a commitment to the story. It remained a draft of a series. Joe Landsdale aside, the screenwriters just couldn't get it together.
