It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.

It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

I'd say that it's like this - When you've got a 1960's TV sitcom where the most likable and interesting character in it is, in fact, an ordinary barnyard pig (Arnold) - Then - You know you're really in for some truly terrible viewing time. (And, that was the case here with "Green Acres")Within just 3 episodes - This show's predictable, "one-note-joke" premiss was completely milked bone-dry. I cannot believe that this shallow "seen-it-all-before" show actually endured for 6 seasons. And, finally - If I never hear "Green Acres" cringe-worthy theme song (or Eva Gabor's deliberately mangled mispronunciations) ever again - It'll certainly be too soon for me. ("You are my wife - Goodbye city life" - Blech!)

Green Acres is brilliant. It's Oliver Douglas's American dream turned surreal nightmare week after week. It's like Dali meets Bunuel meets American Gothic. The logic is completely twisted. But it is consistent. And Oliver is the only one not in on the joke. The writing is first class. Read some of Mr. Kimball's dialog written down some time. It is beyond belief. I recall several mind blowingly funny episodes. The one where they decide to have their own college bowl game. The Rudabaga (sp?) Bowl. Lisa gets in a hot air balloon, flies across the country tossing out rutabagas and exclaiming: "eat Hootersville rutabagas." The episode where Mr. Haney pulls up with a full-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower in the back of his truck. Oliver asks Eb where Haney gets this stuff. "I think his mom knits 'em" exclaims Ed. But my particular favorite is the one where Arnold gets drafted to go to Vietnam. He has a whole scene with a horse who has just returned from Nam. It is subtitled and the horse waxes harsh and poetic about his time in Vietnam. There are things in this series that go beyond the bounds of anything ever tried in American TV. Green Acres rocks!

All I remember about Green Acres is that I used to hate it, but I couldn't remember why until I caught a few episodes recently - after 40 years. Eva Gabor is great, Eddie Albert is funny enough even though for somebody supposed to be eternally cheerful he always looked very peevish to me, and all the supporting cast, Tom Lester in particular, are as good as any in Cheers or the like. Even the scripts, compared to contemporary US sitcoms, are inventive and fairly sparky. But that laugh track! It's absolutely TERRIBLE! Did TV runners really allow shows to go out with that awful noise attached? Green Acres must have been the peak of laugh track sitcom, before they realised what they were doing. It's painful! It actually slows the comedy right down, and completely spoils what could be an amiable comedy of manners. Take out the laugh track, speed the playback up a notch, and it could stand re-release, but as it is it's almost unwatchable.
