A brilliant film that helped define a genre
... View MoreThis is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
... View MoreIf you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
... View MoreThe plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
... View MoreIt's just an awful show. Story is different than Everybody hates Chris but it's the same theme. Don't waste your time on all ready seen stuff. Move on, you are better then this. :D
... View MoreNot quite the caliber of Malcolm In The Middle, Fresh Off The Boat depicts the semi- biographical life of Eddie Huang, growing in Orlando. The show is a good family friendly comedy with Randall Park nailing his bit as a hardworking Taiwanese business and family man Louis Huang trying to make a life for his family. Louis Huang is at the moment, the best representation of the modern father and role model; compassionate, loving, understanding and dedicated. TV always portray fathers as a an incompetent deadbeats. While it is entertaining, it is also outright false, misandric and derogatory. It's a breath of fresh air to see a father figure that is kind, capable and Randall Park, even though he's Korean, really did the character justice. Constance Wu is pretty good too although she is nowhere near as good as Jane Kaczmarek was in Malcolm In The Middle. In fact, this is my main criticism of the show. Being an Asian myself, who grew up in Asia, raised by an Asian mom, I know how the typical Chinese wives and mothers truly are and the character Jessica Huang is neither an accurate nor an entertaining representation of them.Asian moms are noisy, whiny, spoiled, bitchy, controlling, annoying, cruel, demanding and materialistic. Jessica Huang is portrayed as a Mary Sue, and I loathe Mary Sues. She is one dimensional and entirely unbelievable, and it's only the deftness and charm of Wu that saves the character. Kaczmarek role as Lois is MITM is a closer representation of Asian wife and mother than Jessica is, which is why I feel Constance Wu is underused. I suspect she has the range to pull off a real Asian wife and mother, which would have been so much more fun to watch. The rest of the cast is alright. Especially characters Evan and Emery Huang who are typical dutiful Asian sons and even the character Eddie Huang is well represented as the rambunctious oldest son. I have read some reviewers claiming that the show displays the Chinese as subtly racist. What? You only noticed that now?! The Chinese are pretty much the most ethnocentric and xenophobic culture in the world. They discriminate everyone and everything that is different. In fact, to me the jabs that you see in the show towards other races are too subtle, which is appropriate for the family- oriented market. All in all, it's pretty good light comedy that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
... View MoreIt took a few episodes for FOTB to find its feet but once it did, it can't stop getting better and better. Congratulations to getting a 24 episode order for season 2, given that 22 is usually the max. The one liners are classics and even if you aren't a Chinese viewer, you'll still love the warmth generated. Jessica will do anything to care for her children and it shows despite her sternness. The plot twists (the one with Oscar Chow for instance) are amazing.I think one of the reviewers missed the point when s/he wrote in IMDb:"The situations are often genuinely funny as the Chinese family (although isn't Randall Park Korean?...ah well, all Asians look alike...that seems to be the thinking here?)"Randall is an actor and all actors learn to play roles outside their ethnicity. Jewish actors played Nazis in Hogan's Heroes and we accepted that. Similarly Russell Crowe plays Americans, British actors play Americans, Meryl Streep played a British Prime Minister!!!! Let's not forget Renee Zellweger played Bridget Jones, a British icon!! Also I don't think French performers were in Le Miserables!!!! Ironic!! So I think we need to get over Randall playing a Chinese character. He's an actor, and a fine one at that.
... View MoreThis show having an 8.1 before I left a review astonishes me. The pilot episode had promise even though the trailer just like any comedy today spoils all the jokes in the episode to the point the only people laughing will be the people you tell about this show. The show really feels like the 1990s, era correct shirts. Albums and making fun of a lot of stuff from that era like dial up internet being really awful compared to what it is now. There is even some somewhat famous actors in it from other big series such as C.S. Lee - Vince in the series Dexter, the guy who does Ari's assistant in Entourage the gay Asian guy and Stevie from eastbound and down. On one hand this show can be a breath of fresh air as there is way too many cop, castle and zombie shows on right now. What is good about this is they can get away with a lot of stuff other shows cannot because the trend is to be politically correct. The grocery store "If you get lost go with a white family, You'll be safe" or whatever else comes to mind. They picked a good time to get the series up off the air no shows are like it and story wise moving right to Orlando is a good start to it. However I'd be more interested if they were legitimately off the boat in Washington DC and just change up Eddies age. But I'm sure some show will rip it off and do it eventually. The cast like the episodes are hit and miss. Perhaps that is what Eddies family was really like but the father I wouldn't have hired Randall Park. I cannot take him seriously. Either he's a really good actor trying to be that goofy dad role or he's just terrible. The next character I don't like is Eddie. Yeah the series revolves around him. He can have his moments absolutely but the walking into the room with a "boom box" his grandmother plays and a bunch of stuff just make you want to hate him. He's like a chubby bitchy watered down fusion of Bart Simpson or Malcolm in the middle who likes Biggie and other popular rappers at the time. The only reason a lot of people probably watch this show is to see the mom. She doesn't take crap from anyone and is definitely the comic relief of the show as Eddie makes it so you can't watch more than one episode without turning it off. The stories and all were very tame, after episode one the show went down hill and was very hit and miss. The little brothers bring nothing to the story but just add banter to stretch out episodes. All in all it's like a slightly edgier sitcom that if it was any weaker in terms of what they do it would be on the Disney network. Mrs Browns boys is 10x funnier I found and expected way more out of this show, the only reason I'm checking out season 2 is I kind of hope it got better from the nobody who made this series. All the people who are Asian offended by this show need to get their heads out of their "bums" and learn to laugh at jokes. That chicken can only cross so many roads and we laugh at certain things because they are true, I can laugh at other white people so you can laugh at other Asians as stereotypes exist for a reason. If I did the script it would never have made it to a family friendly network.
