The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

Elfen Lied does everything that makes me roll my eyes or makes me sigh out of boredom and disbelief. This is an anime that doesn't want to tell a good story or even give us interesting characters, but instead, be as graphic and disturbing as possible. There are being called Diclonious that have invisible arm like appendages called vectors that they can use to dismember anyone in their path. This is where we are introduced to characters such as Lucy, Nana, and Mariko, who are discriminated and often times, tormented by the humans. Lucy, the main character, breaks out of a research facility, but loses her memory after being shot, and becomes Nyu, a split personality of Lucy.We then have the human characters such as Kouta, Yuka, Mayu, Kurama, Bando, and several others I can't bother to remember. Kouta has the typical tragic backstory that was so tragic that he doesn't even remember the incident when coming face to face with Lucy. Yuka is the cousin of Kouta that only exists just so there is incestuous pandering. Mayu also has a tragic backstory that made me stop caring since almost everyone has to have one. Kurama is probably the only interesting character of the show and whose backstory is the best out of the bunch, especially when it came to his Diclonious daughter, Mariko. And Bando is just the prick who would find any reason to hurt or kill anyone he sees. There are so many problems with this anime, starting with how unrealistic the characters are portrayed to be. They make them as if humans were the devil's spawn and the slow and boring writing doesn't really help at all. This anime has almost no substance and its only defining features are the dark elements that are played, but even then it fails at that. This anime tries to be mature, but like some other anime that delve into this sort of subject matter, it has no clue what the hell maturity is.Overall, this anime is way too edgy and often doesn't know how to create compelling characters or even follow up on an interesting concept with poor writing. Originally, I would have given this a one out of ten, but Kurama and Mariko were the only saving graces for this anime, everything else can go suck it.

Disappointed, saw the series based on the hype and I had read the manga ages ago, although I didn't remember much from the read besides the start being slow and ending being amazing.Well the anime is just a waste of time. The production focuses on shock, nudity and gore as the core, without much emphasis given on plot or script. It's not able to play out the emotions which are the center point of the manga as far as I remember. In condensing the series the anime loses out on proper build up. Felt the anime tried to please too many genres which just don't fit in together.I am pretty sure harem and deepness don't go hand in hand. Only thing I liked about the series is the haunting melody "Lilium" and even that is an acquired taste.

This anime is based on the manga of the same name, created by Lynn Okamoto. The story revolves around a young girl named Lucy who escapes from her prison because of her disease. She is found naked offshore by Kohta and Yuka. Lucy has lost her memory and gets the name Nyu, because that's the only thing she knows what to say.Meanwhile, the bad guys in the prison wants to kill Lucy, so they send trained men to find and kill her.I enjoyed this anime, despite using excessive violence and nudity. The story was good and the animation was done well. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the ending, but overall it was great. Both the manga and anime is aimed towards adult males. I advise you to watch this anime, you won't be disappointing.8/10

I've noticed that this anime fits into the "love it/ hate it" category. Personally I fall into the love it category. It has its problems, be it the lackluster animation and voice acting or the abrupt ending, but it overcomes that with its story that keeps you engaged the whole way through. The story is like a gruesome car wreck, It's hard to watch but you can't stop watching. What's prevalent in the story is the concept of "monsters", be it the literal monsters (diclonius), or the people whose acts are so evil, they might as well be monsters. The series is brutal and depressing and no one is spared. Though in between all the horrible things is almost what seems like a lighthearted comedy. It strange at times, but ultimately it works and makes you feel for them that much more. As I said, the presentation isn't the best. The animation and voice acting( original and dub) could have been better. The music though is spectacular. It's haunting, moving, and keeps the tension high. The intro, is easily one if the best intros in animation. It's haunting and beautiful, I'd go as far to say that it's art. all in all, I would say this series isn't for everyone, but you should probably check it out and decide whether you love it or hate it.
