The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.

I thought I would open with the spoiler in case you were wondering which why this ultimate good vs. ultimate evil thing works out. Good wins. Now that we have that out of the way, people, get a grip. This is not the greatest fantasy martial arts movie ever made, nor is it DBZ writ large. It is a very enjoyable, typically confusing, battle of the gods. We are mortals trying to explain thunder and lighting. It's the gods battling on Zu Mountains. Get it? You want plot? Go watch Crouching Tiger. You want to understand the development of the characters or what motivates them? Don't watch kung fu movies. You want to watch a bunch of cool weapons with immortals going at it to the bitter the end and beyond? Invest and hour and a half and check it out. Oh yeah, there's a moment when it looks like evil will win but don't worry. Harmony will be restored to the universe.

Another beautiful mess out of Hong Kong…."The Legend of Zu" is a beautiful film, no doubt about it. Colors explode onto the screen in nearly every frame and there are some extremely cool shots of our heroes flying about, battling flying skulls and waves of blood. The special effects are no Weta, but they're passable. There are some real fun scenes here, and some flashes of originality in the fight scenes. Unfortunately, what little story there is -- something about mystical clans uniting to defeat a demon named Insomnia -- is incoherent when not horribly clichéd. Does anyone *really* think our hero King Sky will stay dead after his burn-accident? Is anyone surprised when Ying rediscovers his prowess with a sword? So once again we're treated to a technically beautiful film, but one that's crippled by a confusing plot and poor characterization. I never could muster up even the slightest interest in the protagonists, and the villain bordered on the absurd. Watch "The Legend of Zu" for the amazing visuals, but if you're looking for a compelling story, check elsewhere.

When Tsui Hark experiments, nothing and no one can withstand him. Legend of Zu is possibly 6Hours condensed into 1h40. One does not understand all, but like at "2001 A Space Odyssey" you also don't have to, but one feels the power of the film to every second, every picture. An extraordinary vision of the future of the 7th art and the one of the most pioneering, astounding, rejoicing in the recent years. VITAL severe MASTERPIECE! It's absolutely perfect as it is.When Tsui Hark experiments, nothing and no one can withstand him. Legend of Zu is possibly 6Hours condensed into 1h40. This Tsui Hark film also seems to get a verbal beating...naturally we can all waste our time banging on about opinions etc...but I was truly astounded after seeing this film...perhaps it is because I'm a Tsui Hark mentalist but this film was nuts on so many levels, so much visual stuff was happening all the time that it really makes you wonder just how someone directs a film like this...I mean compare this to The Phantom Menace which I believe came out about the same time and Legend of Zu beats it hands down...perhaps it is too much for most viewers which is perhaps why Miramax(?) did not give it a general release in the states which I think would have then given it the chance to at least show in SOME cinemas here in the UK...in any case, I liked it and if you have been hearing / reading negative reviews and have not seen it - give it a chance!
