It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review

It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.

Everyone knows Billy Connelly is funny and you can almost guarantee a laugh watching any movie he is in, similarly you can say it for most movies Ben Miller is in. Well that is my opinion anyway.Well forget that those two are in this one and watch this for the three funniest characters you will probably ever watch. They are all 10 years old or younger.I laughed so much in this movie and just loved it to bits.Watch it if you get the chance, absolutely hillarious.

Hey! This is first review I've made on IMDb that highly rates a film. We laughed out loud at some points. Then the next morning watched the film again. The film is a bit like the BBC show Outnumbered, with parents vs children, all of whom have their comical and darker sides. The children are charming, never seeming to be acting at all, just natural. David (Dr Who) Tennant and his wife Rosamund Pike are always worth watching and a safe pair of hands for the excellent, slightly surreal and wacky script by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin. Even Billy Connolly kerbed his often over-the-top routines and played his part well. The other actors provide a good backdrop for the film, especially Ben Millar as the OTT brother and Celia Imrie doing her pursed-lips routine in her small but effective part. This is a family film that should be a delight for everyone.

Doug (David Tennant) and Abi McLeod (Rosamund Pike) are getting a divorce. They take a road trip with their young kids Lottie, Mickey, and Jess to attend his father Gordie (Billy Connolly)'s birthday party. They want to keep the split a secret. Gordie is also dying of cancer. His other son Gavin has jittery wife Margaret and emo teenager son Kenneth. Gavin is a wealthy fund manager and plans a big party. Gordie takes off for the beach with the three kids. Most of all, the kids are adorable and they are great characters. There are some fun family dysfunctions and inappropriate subject matters. There is the big event which would be better later in the movie. The last act does try too hard to bring the family together. The story would flow better as a smaller family comedy without the media and a smaller police presence. That's not to say the last act doesn't have some good laughs and touching moments.

What We Did on Our Holiday is a shocking movie with a poorly written storyline and a promising cast that couldn't do anything to save this. It fails on so many levels, the only worth while part of this entire movie is Billy Connolly's performance, which was very real as he plays a man concerned about the day he dies, something that he has been worried about himself for a while now, other than that everything else in this is disastrous, the biggest mistake they made is putting the three children as the main characters, they have more scenes than Rosamund Pike or David Tennant do, which is simply ridiculous, the kids have no charisma and clearly had very little acting experience. To say that this movie dosen't have a good story is an understatement, because there's isn't even a proper story, I can't properly describe to you what actually happens, other than it starts off seeming like a light hearted family comedy, and then takes a dark, unexpected turn that is without a doubt the most disturbing scene I've ever seen in a movie with a 12 rating. As a comedy it fails, there is not a single scene that I laughed or even grinned at, it tries too hard to be funny, it then goes on to try and be sweet and emotional, which is also an embarrassment, I'm never given a reason to care for these characters, so I don't believe there is any reason for me to feel for them when their conflict is resolved. Slow pace, unfunny and overly sentimental, I would certainly give What We Did on Our Holiday a miss if I were you. A struggling couple take their kids on a family vacation to see their Grandad on his final birthday. Best Performance: Billy Connolly Worst Performance: Harriett Turnbull
