Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

The Alpha Video DVD for "West of Rainbow's End" also includes the Tim McCoy film "Outlaw Deputy". What's kinda funny about it is that both films feature a friend of Tim's getting killed...and Tim seeking justice for the murder! I've seen this same plot device used in some other Tim McCoy movies, which means that it's a real bad idea to be this guy's friend...even if he inevitably captures and punished those responsible! Early in the film, Lightning Ed is murdered. No one is sure who the killer is...and his friend, Tim, is determined to find who did it. So he heads to Red Bluff...with a score to settle! There, he tries to find out who is responsible...and it looks as if some local jerk named Johnson is behind it all. But, being a hero, he can't just shoot the guy....he's got to gather evidence and waits for Johnson to make the first move.Up until late in the film, I would have said this was a rather ordinary B-western. However, the finale is dandy and here they really worked with McCoy's strength, as in real life he was probably the best shooter working in pictures. Tough and exciting....this one's a winner.
