... View Moreit is the rare 'crazy' movie that actually has something to say.
... View MoreOne of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
... View MoreA underrated gem of a action thriller crime caper comedy that manages to wrap around multiple subplots quite neatly and always give you a couple of surprises along the way.Heath Ledger is very good in the lead, and co-stars as a young Rose Byrne as his romantic interest and Bryan Brown as a ruthless crime boss are also very good... In fact all of the cast deliver what they are supposed to.I watched it 15 years ago and really liked it, I wasn't sure if it was gonna be one of those movies that could stand the test of time but it really turned out to be able to do that when I rewatched it today, so that was nice.Yeah well worth seeing, and then some. Solid soundtrack as well.
... View MoreTwo Hands is an "Australian gangster comedy" (as Heath describes it (1). Heath plays Jimmy, a hot, tender and simple guy mixed up with the Sydney mafia. Heath describes Jimmy as "a young guy that ... is growing up all his life in The Cross. His mum maybe was a prostitute ... his father is dead maybe ... basically he is in a world where he believes that this is his only path in life ... he meets a lovely young lady, Alex, and she opens his eyes and let's him see that there's another light at the end of the tunnel" (2). Two Hands, a film alla Tarantino and, for some moments, alla Jim Jarmusch, was the first movie filmed and based on Kings Cross (Sydney's red-light district): "It's something that we haven't really seen in Australia ... the gangster side of Sydney ... we see it on the Godfather, we see them driving around in their Rolls-Royces, but we don't see the Australian godfathers in their stubby shorts and singlets (3) drinking VBs (4) ..." (5). The film is funny, strong and cool (without counting the "zombie scenes", which I didn't like at all), and the director (Gregor Jordan) and cast surrounding Heath (Bryan Brown, David Field and Rose Byrne) are amazing. Heath got a Best actor in a Leading Role nomination in the Australian Film Institute. (1) Heath Ledger Interview. Two Hands (1999) -Look for the link in YouTube- (2) Heath Ledger Interview. ... View MoreThis is my favourite Australian film, not because the cinematography, or acting is flawless. Just for heaps of tiny things.Jimmy (Ledger) is an average guy, wanting just a little bit more than the tiny bit he has in life. Pando (Brown) is the quintessentially Australian, crime boss who can give it to him. In the first scene Jimmy's being dragged into the desert by Pando's guys with guns out and stubbies on. We don't know how he got here, but we're about to find out. We're soon introduced to out narrator: A dead guy, digging at some dirt. He explains yin-yang; the good in the bad and the bad in the good. Two hands is part caper, part thriller, and a bit of romance. And it works. It's an unlikely story of bad luck and insane mishaps. Our narrator ghost is there to remind us that the preternatural isn't all that unnatural. Fate happens. No it's not cinematic genius (though Ledger's charismatic smile might count as a masterpiece). It doesn't break boundaries, or overturn canon. But the rough-edged characters are hilarious, the plot never fails to entertain, and I'm not sure there's anything like it floating around...Watch it. Or watch it again! If you don't ROFL during their "crime spree", you can direct your disappointment this way ;).
... View More"Two Hands" is a hilarious Australian gangster movie set in really sultry Sydney. I bet tourists never envisage Sydney and Bondi to look like it did in this film: all sweaty bodies, oppressive nighttime and gangsters in nylon shorts and jandals. Heath Ledger plays an amateur boxer with an eye on becoming part of the local King's Cross boss's gang. He looked rather magnificent in his green wife beater and blue patterned budgie smuggler. A sweaty tattooed bod does become him. I always had him down as a "Home & Away" boy, and he has been in that soap, which is a little sweatier than the Weetbix-insipid "Neighbours". The film is really worth watching for its combination of sardonic humour and nasty violence - the drowning scene is expected to give me nightmares soon. Totty awards: Country girl love interest city brother and tattooed streetkid.
