Good concept, poorly executed.
... View MoreBrilliant and touching
... View MoreI cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
... View MoreA film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
... View MoreThis is.... surprisingly weak. You have both Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, and none of them are particularly funny in this movie. That said, Rudd is more like a funny straight man more than most comedians, but he can shine, "slap-a-da-bass" anyone? The jokes in here are pretty dim too, and when Americans try to create surreal humour, they seem to always fail miserably. And then we have a lot of predictable scenes, where you can see the joke coming many, many seconds away. If only they were funny, you could forgive (some) of it. But no. You're much better off watching Parks and Recreation again, where any five minutes of any episode, is much better than this entire movie.
... View MoreA small business owner (Amy Poehler) is about to lose her shop to a major corporate development. This film seems to get a bad rap, with people saying it is not a good satire or parody. I respectfully, and strongly, disagree. So many movie conventions are turned on their head. Obviously, the traditional romantic comedy blueprint, but even more than that. And some moments had me laughing out loud (literally).Although "Wet Hot American Summer" is considered a modern classic by some, I think "They Came Together" is the superior film. It's more mature, more consistent. Maybe it will take a few years, but I see this becoming a cult film.
... View MoreI rarely stir myself to write reviews on here but the mega-low IMDb score has forced my hand, because this film is funny. Laugh-out-loud funny, not just for part of the time, but consistently, brilliantly funny. There are some extremely odd comments on here, with people seeming not to get the joke at all, and I have to say I find that perplexing. From minute one it tears into every rom-com cliché with glee. It is to the romantic comedy what The Naked Gun is to the detective drama, and on a first viewing I found it almost as funny. It helps that the leads are naturally very likable, very comedically gifted actors. I've been a fan of Rudd's for a long time and Poehler matches him here. Some of the targets they are shooting at are very soft ones (poking ANY fun at When Harry Met Sally will always leave you standing on very thin ice), and there are a few budget restrictions which keep it from being a movie classic - some folk have rightly pointed out that it is basically a series of sketches - but it IS the funniest film I have seen in a year, and as it's a comedy and that's kind of its job, I feel obliged to gift it a slightly inflated 9 out of 10. A hoot.
... View MoreThis is a movie you have to "get" to appreciate, and if you miss the foundation of it (or simply don't find it funny), you are going to suffer watching it. It is jam packed with dead on, often subtle (although usually not) clichés of the ham fisted acting, trite screenplay lines, and tired plot points that are so commonplace in American films that you may mistake the film itself for being clichéd, ham fisted, trite, and tired. But make no mistake - this is not a "stupid" movie. Instead, it is asking a lot from its audience, maybe more than they can give. I'm not sure if anyone who is under thirty, or has not experienced the hours upon hours of sitcoms, television and film dramas, and of course, romantic comedies that this film draws from, can be in on the joke.Personally, I howled with laughter throughout.
