At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

The incredibly raw documentary, "The Witness" breaks down the murder of Catherine "Kitty" Genovese. What actually took place the night of March 13th, 1964? Kitty's younger brother, Bill, dives deep into every detail of his sister's tragic murder to find out. Bill uncovers an overwhelming amount of evidence, leaving the credibility of the New York Times front page article on the case in shambles. This film left me filled with emotion as my questions were answered one by one. Kitty's life tragically ended at the hands of a man named Winston Moseley and his actions left Kitty known as the woman left to die by her peers. This documentary changed my point of view from a woman who was left by her peers to a woman who died in the arms of a dear friend. I highly recommend this film to anyone who is willing to watch.

The documentary, "The Witness" had no specific intended audience except those that were interested in the case and were wanting to know the truth about what really happened in 1964 with Kitty Genovese. The purpose of this film was to allow Kitty's brother, Bill, to find out the truth about his sister's murder. He looked into as many witnesses as possible and even interviewed the editor of the New York Times in order to uncover the truth. Before watching the film, I had read several articles with differing viewpoints and information. One question that I truly had about these articles and even throughout the movie is if Moseley had gotten in any accident to cause damage to his brain causing him to act out in such a bizarre way or if he was just borderline sociopathic throughout his life and something set him off. The film took place in various places with a main focus on the street that Kitty was murdered. This documentary was very descriptive and informative, providing more information than any article managed. I learned that not only were several details left out of news stories, but that many twists occurred as well. For example, Kitty's friend stated that she would help a million times over again but the stories stated that no one helped out of fear. There were also several people that supposedly called the cops that night, but no phone records were kept of it. Some suggestions that I have on this film include that I wish Bill Genovese had decided to look into his sister's murder sooner, so that more of the witnesses were still alive.

The Witness documents Bill Genovese's attempt to understand the circumstances surrounding the murder of his sister, Kitty Genovese. Those familiar with the murder by Winston Moseley and the subsequent explosion of media coverage were most likely the intended audience. With this documentary, Bill sets out to find the truth about what happened on the night of March 13th, 1964, and the alleged thirty-eight witnesses who did nothing. Before watching this movie, I was aware of the true events as well as the sensationalism that followed, and I expected to see the "urban apathy" angle on the events discussed and refuted which was included. My favorite sections of the film were the parts that were stylistic, gray scale, and animated, and where silhouettes of the witnesses looking down on the first attack voiced their recollections of the events unfolding. I also enjoyed the tense interaction between Bill and Winston Moseley's son in which both sides are victims of circumstance. However, I did not like the reenactment where Bill has a woman scream loudly on the same street where Kitty was attacked. It seemed like a cheap way to evoke an emotional response from the viewers and further played into Bill's obsession with the murder. Overall, I enjoyed this documentary, but I was let down by the seemingly intentional lack of conclusion. I would recommend this to anyone curious about the true events and the aftermath of the murder of Kitty Genovese.

In the documentary The Witness, Bill Genovese is on a mission to find out the truth behind the death of his older sister Kitty Genovese. This film does a great job informing the audience on what had happened that night in 1964. Over 40 years later people all over are still asking the question, what truly did happen that night. Throughout the movie they kept finding facts and facts about that night that no one has ever heard before. From interviewing Kitty's neighbor who held her when she took her last breath, to sitting down and talking with the murderer's son. I think this film is put together perfectly and shows everyone what did indeed happen that night.
