The Time and Turn of Augusto Matraga Trailers

Based on Guimarães Rosa's (classic Brazilian author) short story, the movie tells the story of Augusto Matraga, a bankrupt and violent farmer who lives above the Law in Minas Gerais' hinterland. During a difficult time, he finds himself in the middle of a trap that nearly kills him. Born again, Matraga resorts to faith and hard work in the pursuit of redemption. Years later, he arrives at the village reigned by the hinterland's ruler and his thugs. This new friendship will challenge his destiny. Inside Matraga, the Saint and the Warrior will duel until his time comes.

The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

This is ultimately a movie about the very bad things that can happen when we don't address our unease, when we just try to brush it off, whether that's to fit in or to preserve our self-image.

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

Based on the story by Guimarães Rosa (a kind of Brazilian James Joyce), the saga of Augusto Matraga, a rude, belligerent and womanizer farmer who is forced out of the powerful top space for the oppressed and marginalized, reminds us that there is no more room for the mythical heroes of the past, because modern man brings within not only the hero, but also the coward, not only good, but also evil. Through his hard work, his prayers and faith that he would have his time and choice, Augusto develops a compassion that was profoundly hidden. Bravely and surprisingly he finds its ultimate redemption. Masterfully filmed in the region of Diamantina (North of Minas Gerais), a delight to the eyes, the film reveals a little bit of the linguistic ingenuity of Guimarães Rosa, rebuilding the Portuguese language from the simple people from backwoods. To watch and appreciate.
