Intense, gripping, stylish and poignant
... View MoreGood idea lost in the noise
... View MoreIt’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
... View MoreA film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
... View MoreI was looking forward to watching l'auberge espagnole since one of my favorite language YouTubers recommended it as a learning device. I don't know what they drank when they watched this because this movie should not be praised. I think its possible to root for a protagonist who is not perfect. We have Heisenberg, we have Tony Soprano. But this guy comes off to seemingly everyone as perfect when he is really a sexist, hypocrital pig who doesn't get his comeuppance. I don't care how relatable this may be to the traveling foreigner. I'm just thinking why did they portray this guy so badly. He tells his mother to shut up, convinces a married woman to have an affair, and got mad when his girlfriend says she has moved on. He disgusts me and it disgusts me that this movie is revered. It makes me question if this is normal behaviour for people in France. Never has a film made me feel such disgust for a character. What makes it worse is that people like this movie, they relate to it. I'm sorry but I cannot relate to an awful human being. All they had to do was make him likable, that's all.
... View MoreIts a movie book.Between the opening and closing of the paperback cover resides a sweet fresh movie avoiding the cliché life and still talking about the same old love, friendship, marriage and all the likes.Dare not miss the intricacies of each scene(highlights being the after party scene or the silent narrations of Xavier, annoyingly funny British brother or the rendezvous between Xavier and Anne-Sophie).I would rather call it peeping through a keyhole into the lives of strange expatriates. It all looks that natural at the core. Cinematic experience starts getting richer with addition of every character.Though the movie does not deal with going into depth of each character and is based on their superficial portrayal, its more about life on the surface for 5-6-7 roommates and the intersections. An interesting mix of events is sure to happen when each one comes from different world and still mingle like a perfect cocktail, secret recipe being the flavor of youth.A french arty-farty movie,it still melts like cheese with the air of warmth surrounding each of the characters.
... View MoreL'auberg espagnole tells the story of Xavier, a french student that in order to secure a job has to learn Spanish and know the Spanish financial market inside out. The only way to do this is to live in Spain, so he applies for the Erasmus program and moves to Spain where he lives for one year in a small flat with a bunch of other students, all of them from different countries.Xavier gets along with his room mates just fine and makes quick friends wherever he goes. He also gets in a relationship with an older woman despite having a girlfriend in France. The film is all about the adventures of this students while living in Spain and the changes in Xavier's life in this one year period. The premise of the film is interesting but it turned out to be a bit of a mess...we have all this characters speaking different languages at the same time( not that I didn't understand,it was just too messy) plus the plot drifts way too much and the acting was cringe-worthy at times. Not every time but there were a few "embarrassing" scenes.Nevertheless it was fun to watch this students and their adventures. Its a quirky, fun, lighthearted movie but its just average.6/10
... View MoreInteresting film about student life in the Erasmus program.Romain Duris plays Xavier, a French man who decides to study in the Erasmus program for a year in Barcelona. Xavier is in the midst of searching for his identity and deciding what direction his life will take (like so many of us at 25). While initially feeling sad about missing his girlfriend and his home, Xavier find new friends in his flatmates and experiences a different life in Barcelona. Some of Xavier's actions might seem un-noble, but the idea is that this character is human and has flaws. Overall, a fun quirky film. Audrey Tattou plays the girlfriend. A diverse European cast play the part of the flatmates. William, Wendy's annoying Brit lad brother, steals most of his scenes, and Soledad and the French physician's wife are beyond hot.
