Yes, absolutely, there is fun to be had, as well as many, many things to go boom, all amid an atmospheric urban jungle.

The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.

A science teacher, his wife, and a young girl struggle to survive a plague that causes those infected to commit suicide. Mark Wahlberg stars as a teacher who talks to plants and basically plants make people die cause why wouldn't they right? The performances are laughable, the script is bad and the entire plot sounds dumber than it already is and i totally get it why so many people hate M. Night Shyamalan the man had such a promising career and outside of the brilliant Sixth Sense and the underrated Signs he has made a few watchable but flawed films such as Unbreakable and Split but movies such as The Happening and The Visit is when good careers go and die and unfortunately this is what happened in 2008 with this movie thankfully everyone still has a career and make great films again but making a film where Wahlberg talks to plant like he is stoned or something isn't actually comedic it's just retarded. (0/10)

The happening is a great movie. It's about something that effects humans in a way that makes them start killing themselves. First, people become confused. Then they kill themselves. It is revealed after some suicides that plants have released some sort of toxin into the air that reverses the survival instinct in humans, and therefore they want to kill themselves. The plants do this because of the bad effects people are having on the environment. The suicide parts are scary. Examples are a woman sitting on a bench next to another woman in New York City. This is the first suicide. The woman who kills herself tells the other woman she doesn't know where she is or something. The woman sitting next to her thinks she's joking and says something in response. The other woman then pulls something out of her hair and stabs herself in the neck with it. Other suicides include a man getting into a lion's pen at a zoo and a lion bites or tears his arms off. The movie is very scary and creepy and the plant's toxin thing is a very interesting idea. It's not as good as the sixth sense. It's way better than signs and way way better than lady in the water. Lady in the water is awful and signs is fairly bad. M. Night Shyamalan really came back good with this one.

First, a spoiler alert--I can't illustrate how truly awful this movie is without specific examples that include descriptions of the scenes and the dialog. Maybe just saying it's awful is a spoiler (this is my first IMDb review)...so I'll add that I can't say everyone will dislike it as much as I did.The best part of this film is the sped-up clouds behind the opening credits, which Night copied from what, like a billion cliché videos and films? It's all down hill from there. Just about one minute into the first scene, the nonsensical action, bad script and stilted acting burst out like water from a fire-hose. No more than a minute later, it's clear that this scene makes no sense, and the classic B-movie characteristics start to emerge like cockroaches in a bad horror film--the oddly loud overdubbed breath of surprise, everyone except the protagonist (who, we find out a scene or two later, is not the protagonist) being frozen as if time has stopped, the person right next to her can't hear what she's saying (hasn't everyone seen Carnival of Souls?), the "suspense" when the girl grabs a 9-inch hair pin from her coif and (much too slowly, even though it's only about 3 seconds) does the obvious with it...Scene 2 opens with a construction worker telling a joke that makes no sense whatsoever. After the nonsensical joke, what is supposed to be a person but clearly is some kind of mannequin plops into a pile of debris. It happens so fast that no one possibly could tell who it was (you can't even glean a flash of what clothes the supposed person was wearing), but the character I would call Construction Worker #1 exclaims, "Christ, McKenzie fell." And so it goes...from minute to minute, second to second, it continues to get worse. Bad dialog, bad acting, bad directing. However, I must add that even the best actor can't act his or her way out of a script this terrible.Despite what I wrote in the first paragraph, I'm going to recommend that no one waste even one minute on this film.

*******************May Contain Major Spoilers*********************Okay this movie has way too many flaws that you ask yourself if it's intentional then you start to realize it really isn't it's just a bad movie. I really tried to pay attention to all the details to reconstruct the plot but it just does not make any sense. Why the plant caused most people around Mark Wahlberg and Zoey Deschanel to commit suicide but they spared Marky Mark, his Lady and the little girl. Nobody knows it's supposed to be a mystery in the world of M Night Shyamalan. Well guess what Mr Shyamalan your movie makes 0 sense and don't try to come up with that excuse that it's supposed to be a B Movie or mystery with a twist BS. No, this movie is just plain weird. The actors are acting strange. People around the main characters don't know how to act. This movie gets 0 out 10 for acting. 1 out 10 for plot twist and 0 for the script. The only good thing about this movie is that is shot properly like any other respectable movie but the actual content of the movie is terrible. This movie script and direction made Mark Wahlberg look like an extremely weak actor with some of the weirdest line deliveries i have ever seen. I think at that point M Night Shyamalan felt too confident with his film making style that he thought people would be fascinated with his piece of art. And what's up with M Night movie thinking they are better than they actually are except for the 6th Sense and Unbreakable i have not seen one solid Shyamalan movie. In unbreakable and the sixth sense the plot twist made sense and were very clever although they revolve around the supernatural. This one not so much we are just going along with Shyamalan film making. Bottom line don't watch this movie expecting much from it because there isn't. The plot doesn't make sense, the actors are terrible, the twist is revealed early on the movie even the way the plants are acting i mean the plants are just being plants for real there is no evidence those people dying is even related to the plant. Okay i stop this movie i just plain stupid at the end it's just a waste of time unless you are in to laugh at the incredibly bad acting in this movie it is really not worth your time.
