Sadly Over-hyped
... View MoreExcellent, Without a doubt!!
... View MoreIt's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
... View MoreI think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
... View MoreI needed to buy another DVD to get a discount, and this one sounded interesting and was inexpensive It was not the light, fluffy comedy that I expected. It has substance, charm, some fine performances, some laughter, and some tears. Scott Baio, Kristin Minter, and Rosemary Prinz were excellent. I don't remember seeing Kristin Minter before, but now I want to see more of her.A Wedding for Bella, as its original name The Bread, My Sweet suggests, is a sweet movie; not hardcore. I like good hardcore, but I also like good sweet. For a low-budget, independent feature, it is well worth watching.
... View MoreI first saw The Bread, My Sweet (renamed A Wedding for Bella) when it hit theaters. I wished for a box of tissues as I sat there. This movie touched me very deeply. Rosemary Prinz as Bella was the perfect first-generation Italian woman. While the accent may have been a little hit and miss, the attitude, the facial expressions and the gestures were perfect. I first saw this movie in the year after I lost my grandmother and the similarities between Bella and my Gram are too numerous to be listed.I suppose that my connection to this movie is that it is HOME for me. I feel welcome in Bella and Mossimo's kitchen, I know this family, I have celebrated with them on Christmas Eve. (Not literally of course, but there are many similarities to my large Italian family.)Also, as a displaced Pittsburgher, I do feel a strong connection to this movie that I suppose many other people don't have.I was very surprised by Scott Baio in this movie, I thought he was excellent. Rosemary Prinz was also totally convincing in her role, and Shuler Hemsley as Pino, oh, what can I say, my heart just breaks for him. Kristin Minter is really the only drawback in the cast, coming off as wooden and somewhat unfeeling. All in all, a fantastic movie, but be armed with tissues.
... View MoreA very good tearjerker. Scott Baio is amazingly good as is the entire cast. The accents of Bella and Massimo are not good (although I'm not Italian, I grew up in a strong working-class Italian neighborhood) but they don't really take away from their performances. The new (i.e. relatively unknown) actress who plays Lucca is a gem. I would like to see here more often. Shuler Hensley as Pino wrenches the heart. The story line is far-fetched, but the acting and setting are so good, they come very, very close to making it entirely believable. The Pittsburgh backdrop is gorgeous and greatly adds to the film.If you're jaded and not sentimental or do not come from an ethnic background you may not like it, but if you're a sentimental Italian, or Greek, or Spaniard, or Lebanese, etc., I think you will enjoy it and use up a box of tissues.
... View MoreI thought this movie was TEN TIMES better than My Big Fat Greek Wedding (which is what the back of the DVD compares it to). I guess those who thought that it wasn't good DID NOT grow up in some kind of ethnic setting. The movie was so true to life, and Italian-born mother would act exactly as Bella did. If I were in the same position, I would fall in love with Scott Baio too, I mean, who wouldn't? I though the scenes with Bella were extraordinary and she did such a great job, as did Massimo, Dom and Luca. I think a movie like this has to be accepted with an open heart and an open mind. In the movie, death, an otherwise sad event, actually becomes an occasion to forget about as the family gathers around Bella in an attempt to make her last days her best. No one pitied Bella, and in the end, no one lied to her either. I think this movie was beautifully done, mixed with elements from several genres. This is one that I'm going to add to my collection.
